IRC is actually "Old School" as far as internet chatting goes.

Not supporting IRC is like buying stock in Gillette

Buying stock in Gillette (Proctor & Gamble) is probably a safe long term investment. By the context I'm guessing that you mean not supporting IRC is bad...

I understand IRC being old school, and I understand that it probably allows more access options for people than any other chat system. It just seems that it requires users to be more "techy" than any other chat that I've used.

SASL authentication is only required on some nets.

If you tell me what client you are using I will tell you the configuration you need to change to get it to work.

Right of the bat, I'd change the server to irc.freenode.net and see if that makes this go away.

For those who are dieing to find out what SASL is, it is authentication using a certificate of authority (CA) to encrypt communications between the client and server. Freenode upgraded to ircd-seven some time ago and this is an option. Emphasis in option, so you needn't authenticate with a CA - which you'd have to download and some other shyte that is really annoying to the non-geeks.

I'm not encrypting, using pidgin, and connect without problems.
The problem is when using Pidgin portable. SSL is turned off, and the server it's pointed to is irc.freenode.net.

do you have a registered nickname on freenet?

it seems your portable pidgin is using tor as a proxy, which wants some authentication. I'm not a user of the portable version, and am not using tor (or any proxy), so I'm troubleshooting dry.

seems the easy fix is to uncheck the use ssl option.

I do have a registered nick, and "Use SSL" is unchecked (turned off).

Could this have anything to do with my ISP and some kind of security protocols they have in place?
