soaps and creams
I tried the bigelow Premium shave cream and for me it doesn't work. can't seem to get the lather i'm use to. Guess I'll make lather with my cake of soap and add just a little of this to spice it up some. has anyone done this before. It's going to be interesting to see how it works.

Thanked: 1184I put some of Al's shaving cream with some Mama Bear's soap. There was an explosion and the next thing I knew there was lather all over the place :<0)
P.S. I had to shave 7 directions just to use up all the lather.Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Thanked: 3225Yea, quite a few people combine soaps and creams. Just search "uberlather" on this site and you will get plenty of ideas for different combinations.

I sometimes combine Proraso sandlewood with MWF. It makes enough lather to shave a buffalo.

Thanked: 1195Are you using enough product? Too much/too little water?

In my experience, creams usually need surprisingly more water than you'd expect to get a good lather. My speculation about it is that what looks like a small amount of cream is more "product" than you would pick up on your brush from a hard cake of soap, and thus requires more water to lather it up.

Thanked: 1195It depends on the type of brush you use, but generally a dollop the size of an almond is the norm, perhaps more if your brush is dense and large. Just as you would with a soap, add water slowly until you get the desired consistency.
While the above advice is geared towards bowl lathering you can also try face lathering and see what happens....

I tried the cream again tonight . I mixed it with the cake soap and got enough lather for 3 shaves. guess i'll just have to keep experimenting. I do know that I got out the Wade and Butcher 7/8 Diamond Edge and between the lather and that heavy blade the shave went just as smooth as any shave I've ever had. I just love those old heavy blade.
