I think everyone starts not wishing to spend too much until they get good and hooked. Of the soap and cream suggestions Obie has given that I ended up purchasing not one has been a miss. Finer things come in time when you run low on current stores or want a new brush. Quality is what counts. Often enough quality is not the most expensive.

Thanked: 11Stirling "Bonaparte"
Palmolive PIF (big thanks to a generous member)
AOS "Lemon" cream
Creamo Cream
Stirling "Black Cherry" (use on my wife for her legs, she asks me to lather it for her)
Since I am still in the early stages, and am short on tins, I haven't tried all the Stirling soaps I bought. I find they are absolutely great. There was a sharp learning curve for me, coming from mostly from using creams. But the Palmolive PIF blew me away! I have gotten a taste for face lathering because of it, and it was a truly wonderful shaving experience. I am going to see if I can get anything like it in the States."Blade, be true this day." -Richard Rahl, The Sword of Truth Series, By Terry Goodkind

My new amended list after trying XPec and Antica Barbiera Colla not in any order but fantastic shaves.
1. Martin de Candre. Loving the fourgere
2. Antica Barbiera Colla. Not over powering scent but great soap
3. Truefitt and Hill. Great cream great scents.
4. Taylor of Bond Eton. Not all ToB scents are great but Eton...
5. Barrister and Mann Seville is like a perfect barber scent
6. Castle Forbes. The cedar does not do it for me but Lavender and Lime are outstanding
7. Catie's Bubbles. I only have one scent, Tonsorial Parlor, but look forward to trying more.
Current soap/cream inventory is so great I need to keep a list to remember what I have purchased."The best way to have a good idea is to have a lot of ideas." -Linus Pauling

I did not enjoy XPec. I was very excited to try it. The smell is fantastic. Performance was not there for me, could be all the talk had my expectations too high, but I doubt it.
