Thanked: 2284Hand made soaps
Recently I've been on the pages of Etsy and decided to look up shaving soap. To my surprise there's pages upon pages, priced dirt cheap to expensive. I've clicked on a bunch and went over the ingredients on a lot of them. One that stuck out to me was a soap called Soapy Bathmans.

I thought what the heck, and bought 2. The banana one and the bayrum. The reason I started looking, and the reason I've posted this is to get your opinions and thoughts on other handmade soaps. Soaps people are making in Their kitchens and selling on places like Etsy or wherever. Theres gotta be a soap out there, someones making that is a real winner.
Please share any other positive thoughts of soap you've used, thats been hand made. I will post my thoughts on this Bathman soap once I've used it for a while.Burls, Girls, and all things that Swirl....

Andrew, I staring my straight razor shaving experience with locally hand made soaps with a goat's milk base. Not till I tried some other soaps, like VDH Glycerin and their deluxe soap did I realize what a farce those g based soaps were. I'm sure someone can get a decent lather from them but my experiences have them relegated to the back of the shelf. Maybe as a good body soap but it didn't do the job on my beard.

Thanked: 375Have these, all perform very well, and most offer a variety of scents -
Not sure of their processes, and I think only one didn't list the ingredients used - I don't think anyone one would truly be disappointed in any of these shave soaps

Thats exactly what this Thread is for. I'd like to try and keep this positive, I don't want to bash anyones products. That being said, I have had similar experiences with glycerin based soaps, but have had pleasent experiences with others like Col. Conks.
Although the #1 ingredient on the Soapy Bathmans is glycerin, I'm very optimistic about it. The Tallow and lanolin have peaked my interest.Last edited by HARRYWALLY; 12-22-2014 at 06:12 PM.

Andrew, slight mis-understanding. I like the glycerin soaps and are a part of my rotation of product. Milk based soaps don't do it for me.

I just got a puck from tucker hill designs on esty. It was the silverlake scent. In my opinion, this was great stuff. It made a nice lather, and a comfotrable shave. The scent was very plesant, mild, not overpowering. One of my favorites alongside ogallala bay rum. Have tried a few handmade glycerine soaps, but glycerine just isnt my cup of tea.

Making a first class shaving soap ain't as easy as it seems. There are plenty of products out there that smell nice and some lather to one degree or another however if you take a soap like MDC just from it's lathering abilities and cushion and glide and forget about the scent there aren't many commercial products that equal it let alone home grown versions.
You can go crazy looking for a good one. Personally I use the tried and true and when new ones are discovered and get plenty of good reviews from experienced shavers I'll consider those.
Of course I encourage everyone to take the bullet for the group and explore. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

As mentioned above making a truly great soap isn't easy. Takes alot of trial and error to create something that will work great. Alot of the soaps out there started out being made in someones kitchen or wherever in small batches until they finally figured out a great recipe that took off and required making large batches to supply the demand.
