Basically luxury goods and the Velben effect seem to go hand in hand from where I sit. Part of the enjoyment is the exclusivity of a good because few can afford/justify the price.

If they lowered the price on MdC to the same level of other French shave soaps it would be just another French soap readily affordable to more people. No bragging rights in that at all.

The price of a luxury good does not necessarily have to reflect the quality of that good.

If you are looking for a luxury soap, spend a third less and buy some Castle Forbes. That tub of soft cream will last over a year. Just barely touch the tips of the brush in the soap and you can have a shaving party with some of the richest, creamy, slickest soap on the planet. The scent will stay with you most of the day as well. Ten thousand times better than MdC.
Get a sample of both MdC and Castle Forbes and see what is what. After a half dozen shaves on each report back and give your findings.
If your not sure where to get samples message me and will give you some links.
    Cheers,

Look at this way, you only live once so why not try it? I would guess most of the guys here have the 200 gram jar, I came across a 50 gram jar and bought it, still kind of pricey though. I bought it a year ago it it looks like I've barely used it. I say treat yourself and if you don't like it then take Ultrasoundguy's advice and put it up for sale in the Classifieds here and it will probably be sold in a matter of minutes.
Why doesn't the taco truck drive around the neighborhood selling tacos & margaritas???

Because it is a waste of money. Why not try Savonnerie du bon Berger, La Cigale, Le Père Lucien, La Savonnerie Du Village, or La Savonnière du Moulin instead? Unless you want "bragging rights" (cf eighth commandment).

To be honest, I have never heard of them. 2 No one in the US carries them. 3 They are an unknown that I just dont trust as of today.
Lastly once you have spoken on them, post holiday when I get some money, I will troll around these sites.Perhaps just perhaps I will make a purchase , I hope the page translates well and the site tells me clearly what the scent is. I just took a leap and bought
Saponificio Varesino 70th anniversay, I still dont know what the scent is based on the website explanation.
There very well may be better. MDC is a KNOWN entity. those that you speak of are unknowns to the community at large.
When us wet shavers buy a great product, we get out our little sample tubs and mail it to our wet shaving friends to try. Thats how we roll.
You want to send me/us a sample? Be glad to try it out before I spend $40 across the pond with shipping.

Finally the last reason is I/we are all soap hoarders , What that means is I have enough soap to last 2 or 3 generations all squirreled away. I have no reason to buy any more soap. But I find an excuse to try another. Plainly stated I hate the hassle of returning overseas a soap I didnt need, spent money I didnt have, just to say I tried it.

Is it not odd how strong opinions and strong research skills hardly ever go hand in hand?

    Le Savon des Volcans
    La Cigale Savon Barbe
    La Savonniere du Moulin Tempetes
    Le Pere Lucien Shaving Soap

Not odd at all. Now that you served them up I bookmarked the page. I will make my next purchase from the above 4 soaps.
Thanks for the links. Nice work, Speedy as well.

Okay can we just all get along now?!?!?! Some like, some love, could care less, some think it's reasonable and some think it's exorbitant, some think it's nourishing, some think is drying....at the end of the day, when it comes to ANY "luxury" product like MdC, YMMV and it's your money. Enjoy the shave!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of my straight razor friends, whatever your opinions may be.

I would say MdC rates pretty highly in my top ten. I don't know if it's the best in the world. My "best" is the Nuavia.
