Arko and Valobra are good sticks from my experience. To lather, I run the tip of the stick under hot running water for a few moments, then load a soaked brush from it followed by face-lathering.

Tube creams I like the lanolin Portuguese options: Valeiro, Top Secret, Lavanda. Also C.O. Bigelow when I'm in a menthol mood.

Ok, thanks gents for all of your recommendations. I will have to try both sticks and tube creams to see how I fare with each one. BobH, the Deep Thoughts video was just what I needed to see . . . I've seen other lathering videos by that guy, and they all make me want to go and lather up even if I don't shave . The shave stick has promise. The creams are on the want list also. And, RezDog, since I am pretty much a newbie, I will have to try not to develop S/CAD (stick/cream acquisition disorder). Am still in a forced intervention re: going overboard on buying eBay junk razors
    Thanks again for the help!

You are welcome, a picture is worth a thousand words. Even as a long time wet shaver his vids helped me too.

If you have a The Body Shop store close by, drop in and ask for a sample of their Maca Root cream to try. I find it very good and testing it is free.

i really like the Palmolive shave stick, i've always just wet it and then rubbed it on my face followed by face lathering. Prorasso is a good choice for a tube also.

    Ha!

Just what I was going to say - love these soaps - the Original is superb, and the Lavender is also very nice, really think these are great soaps, and hugely under rated...excellent Hirlau, excellent.....

I also find the Musgo shave soaps extremely nice, and another soap that is highly under rated as well.....

They have these tubes in 2 sizes,, a smaller one for travel & the larger ones. The Body Works stores always have a buy 2 get one free offer.

Like my friend Bobh said and tintin also,, Arko shave stick, can't beat the lather or ease of use" (I dislike the smell). And Palmolive sticks are great. My self I keep a stick of La Toja. For travel there ain't nothing better than a stick, no Jess and it won't get crushed and ooze out in your bag like a tube. Tc
