    Default Martin de Candre Rose

    Gentlemen,

Martin de Candre is a fine soap. I've had it in the shave den for quite some time. Of course, we're offered many soaps in today's shave world, some just as good as Martin de Candre, but at a skinnier price. Martin de Candre has its critics, too, and that's all right. To each his own.

For years, I enjoyed the Martin de Candre in the original scent: clean and soap. Recently I tried the new rose scent. What a disappointment. Oh, the soap performs just as well as the original, but the rose scent is anemic and forgettable.

Mind you, I don't particularly care for overwhelming scents. Some are so strong that I get a headache. But if a soap is scented, at least the fragrance should have some distinction. Not so Martin de Candre rose, I'm afraid.

Some scents are just synthetic. Blah! For instance, Trumper cream in the rose scent. It is not unpleasant, but you can tell there is something unnatural about it. Some scents are magical, however, just like the real thing, if fruity, herbal or vegital, and a good example of it is the Castle Forbes lime. It's clean and robust. One's almost tempted to spike the Bloody Mary with it.

Martin de Candre rose scent, for me, easily falls in the blah! category. It's scent wasted, I think. It just doesn't talk to me. Once I finish the jar, which should probably take a decade, since it is packed solid, I'm sure I'll forget about it.

I keep promising myself the Original MDC but most of the time I choose Italy over France for my shaving products. I have the MDC fougere and love the scent .
Fair warning though i'll steer clear of the rose.

This is disappointing to hear! I'm also a big fan of the MdC Fougere, and had been planning on buying the rose next time. Maybe I'll start with a sample....

I have to agree with you about MdC Rose, Obie. I find it to be very artificial. I grow over 50 old world roses with wonderful scents, and as much as I like the rose scent, I'm unhappy with most rose scented soaps. Rose essential oil is very expensive as it takes 4,000 kg of rose petals to make 1 kg of essential oil. Manuel Garcia uses it in his Eufros Rosa Bourbon soap, but I'm unaware of any other soap makers who use it. I've always enjoyed using MdC, but have felt they were far more talented with making soap than with creating scents. MdC Fougère is the only scent that I really care for.

I appreciate your review of the soap. One day I hope to try MdC, but that will remain on hold for now. When I do, it will not be rose (not a fan of rose anyhow, but this definitely nails it down).

    Richard,
You're right, it's hard to find a soap or cream with a natural rose scent. I haven't tried Eufros, though. I have the MDC fougere, but haven't tried it yet.

There are several worthy soaps, at a good price, to try. I really do like Wholly Kaw and Oleo. Good stuff.

    MDC a dud? Sacre Bleu!

Next thing you know Obie will be telling us there is no Santa Claus or tooth fairy.

It just goes to show, you can't assume a manufacturer will hit a homerun every time.

    Spendur,
Right you are. I think they blew it this time around. The soap is fine, but I think the rose scent is a dud. OY!

Shaved with the MDC Rose this morning - got the usual fabuluous shave MDC is known for - I don't like overpowering scents - I like the original better but thought the experience taken as a whole was wonderful - sorry fellas!!
