Thanked: 55There are many a good product that have been offered up here already. At this point the only way to know if any are right for you is to try them. I suggest you try some from the entire spectrum to see if you distinguish any vagaries and develop any preferences from them.
My personal recommendation is to try the AOS soap. It is, IMHO, one of the finest shaving soaps available. But only by trying it will you discover if you agree. Hope that helps.
Regards,
EL

I posted this in another thread, but I want to add it here, too.
I have used Honeybee, Crabterr and Evelyn and some more I can't remember. I find TGQ to outperform all of them. I haven't used Mama Bear's soap, so I can't say anything on her products. Maybe I ought to try them, but I'm hooked on Colleen's soap.
I can't say enough about Colleen's Cavendish Black. I love the lather and the scent. I figure I'll be using it as long as she sells shaving soap! I'm spoiled. TGQ'a website is interesting and easy to navigate. And Colleen is a Super Lady.
I have a lot of other shaving soaps in packages on the shelf. They are gathering dust. Since I discovered Cavendish Black, I've not used any other. All the soap that's just lyng there, is 'designer' soap. I quit Williams and Colgate years ago.
Colleen's soap lasts well, too!
TGQ...TWO thumbs up!

Thanked: 2Preference for me runs to the lightly scented soaps that are triple milled: L'Occitane Cade, MWF, etc. If a person has a refined touch and technique, the cold pour soaps can work great, ie: Honeybee, QED, Mama Bear, etc. I actually get a bit closer shave with the cold pour soaps but I have to pay a little more attention to technique when using them.

My favorite soaps of the moment are Institut Karite, Pre de Provence and Mitchell's Woolfat. All are very moisturizing and provide good protection during the shave. Geo. F. Trumpers soaps are also very good, but I'll give a slight nod to the three I mentioned. . .

Thanked: 3I think the best soap is Mitchells Wool Fat soap!! So moisturising that sometimes you don't need to apply any balm! Lathers well too! I also highly recommend Mama Bear soaps and Geo Trumpers!

Thanked: 0I haven't yet done a straight shave but for my double edge shaves I use Wool Fat, Mama Bears, and Proraso.... I will have to try mixing cream and soap next time... I have nothing but good things to say about Mama Bears soaps... great stuff, just got the wool fat yesterday and my first two shaves were incredible with it.... and Proraso (Also packaged and Bigelow at bed bath and bodyworks) is a great shave as well....

I use TQG and C&E exclusively...and fool around with William's when I'm feeling nostalgic - for my money, I love the scent and texture of TGQ, but find that C&E is a close second (when we're talking about soaps).
As for creams, I love C&E Nomad...but I have had very limited exposure to other creams (don't like AOS cream though...).
Of course, YMMV.
