Thanked: 39Soap Moulding?
Dear gents,
I saw somewhere a mention of moulding a soap into a soap bowl..How exactly is this done? I saw someone writing that he put it in the micro for some time and voilį! But this can't be done with a metal bowl..any ideas? Also can this be done with any kind of soap? the one I have is a regular hard one..I could order a soft soap I guess but why not use the one I already have...if I it is possible to mould it

Thanked: 12From what I've heard it depends on the soap. For the milled ones shred and press into the new container. For glycerin based soaps place the soap in the container then place the container in pot with a little bit of water in it, place on stove and heat the water. You won't have to bring it to a boil just watch it so it once in melts enough to take the shape of the container turn off the water remove the soap and let cool.
I have a couple of colleen's soap that I melted into dollar store sugar bowls using the double boiler method above.

I also use the grate and press method. I found that adding a little warm/hot water to the grated soap helps to get it to take the shape of the new container and get rid of the gaps between the shavings (soap shavings, that is).
Melting will work for some, but it can ruin others. You'd have to ask about the results with specific soaps, but grating works with all soaps.

Thanked: 735I always grate the soap, much safer than melting. Easy as can be.
Just be sure to wash the grater thoroughly before the wife tries to grate some cheese for dinner!!!!

There is also the Glen theory of getting your very own soap grater, just let her see ya grate the soap once... Voilą' it's now yer's, and she buys a new one for herself, hey it only takes a day or two of the evil eye and yer in the clear...
I use the double boiler method,(med heat glycerin soaps melt at like 160) and the grater method, I just don't use the microwave at all....Last edited by gssixgun; 02-16-2009 at 09:36 PM.

nuke it in a plastic bowl and then pour it into the metal one.
I make my own soaps, and they all get put into their final containers this way. for pix check out this thread:

never had a problem microwaving soap, and I've done it with soap from at least half a dozen vendors.

If you are going to nuke it or melt it just make sure its a glycerin based soap. If you try and nuke a triple milled type it won't melt and just get ruined. I find about 30sec in the microwave is more than enough.

I had a bath bar of Mitchells wool fat soap, yes, they do make them, given to me by a member, I used a fine cheese grater, added a bit of water, pressed into a small desert bowl and it worked fine...

Thanked: 39Seems like I have multiple options...I'll try them with ordinary soap first and see what happens.
Btw what does tripple milled soap mean? And what's the difference with glycerine based soap? and lastly..how do I know which is which?
