I'm a sucker for Colleen's soaps at TGQ as well. Give them a try. I highly doubt you'll be disappointed.

A soap will usually last longer than the same amount of cream. I have been using TGQ creams lately and they work great. A couple of other creams I found to work well are musgo real and spieck. Tabac is a fine soap as well. One thing to remember is that some of the soap makers have a wider variety of scents.

Thanked: 317To throw out a really random reccomendation, I use Classice Men's Shave Soap from the Fog Wash Soap Company which is a tiny, family owned manufacturer of hand made soaps from some tiny town on the Oregon Coast I can't remember the name of.
I've been using it for about 10 years with a coarse beard and oily skin.

Thanked: 13249Sorry, but out of the multitude of soaps and creams I have used, I have never found one better than Mitchell's Wool Fat for shaving.....
There are tons of great soaps out there, don't get me wrong, I enjoy many of them, but if I need a CLOSE shave I reach for MWF....

+1 on the Mitchell's Wool Fat, I also like Mama Bear's soaps. Each comes in it's own little screw top tub which is nice, you can buy many different kinds and not worry about what to put them in, that's a big plus. Over at Vintage Blades dot com, their triple milled brand stuff is awesome, one of the best I've used. I'm not a fan of Colleen's soaps, at the TGQ, I got the sample pack which is 5 soaps and 2 creams. Most guys that like her's are loyal. Not for me. Tabac is good soap, Castle Forbes is awesome shave cream as is Nancy Boy if you can get past the name. I haven't really come across any that are awful, all are good in their own right. Everyone has their favorites, I like to have variety myself...

Thanked: 1Soap for tough beard
Another point that should be explored is preparation.
Great soap will only work with the right preparation so soften the beard.
For example, one may use hair conditioner during shower on one's beard or even cleanser before the shower to further soften the beard.

As Tabac has been mentioned here alot, a similar soap made by the same manufacturer is Irish Moos. Performs much like Tabac, smells like Irish Spring soap a bit. Fairly cheap for the shaving stick at $15, which seems to last a very long time. AOS, while overpriced I agree, is a great tallow based soap that has a good fragrance and even better performance.

I agree, Mitchell's Wool Fat works great. I have oily skin and a thick beard, and it doesn't let that slow it down.
A thought, I switched to a boar brush from badger and got better results. YMMV...I strop my razor with my eyes closed.
