Other still available tallow based soaps are

    speick - shave stick
    Irisch Moos - Shave Stick
Cella - Crema da Sapone and Crema da Barba All´Olio di Mandorla
    Palmolive - shave stick
    Olivia's soft soap/cream
    Czech & Speake
    AOS
Dr Harris - both tallow and palm oil
    MWF
    The great Tabac off course
Might have forgotten a few. It's still early for me.
Max, I'm being lured by the siren song of tallow soaps. I want some. I've been a glycerin based soap guy up until now.

Out of the ones you've mentioned above, which ones to you like the best and why? Probably a very tough question, I know, but I'd appreciate what you can add. Thanks.

Another one I forgot is my beloved Haslinger Honey scented soap.

But Chris, yes it is really a tough question to answer as scents are very personal. They all are really great in their own league.

I love Tabac, always have. Many hate the scent. I love MWF as it moisturizes as the best but it's hard to get a great lather for many and it tends to be a tad on the airy side. Also the soapy scent tends to turn many away.

Basically you should first try to find out which scent you might favor and then go down the list. They really all perform well.

I agree, there are a great many awesome tallow soaps, but I honestly think that it has more to do with the fact that they've not been screwing with the formula for a few decades. I think cella, one of my true favorites, has been the same since 1899.

Other great tallow soaps are old formula DR Harris, and naturally Penhaligon's, if you can find it. As far as I know, though, no French soaps are tallow based.

That being said, I love valobra soft soap, no tallow but great lather.

    Chris,

I remember your input in one of the MANY Tabac posts saying you did not like the scent. I'll 2nd Max's recommendation of Haslinger Honey, and throw in my own recommendation of L'Occitane. I think L'Occitane rivals Tabac in lather quality and I love the smell.

    Here are some links:

    Shaving Soap | L'Occitane USA

    Haslinger Shaving Soap

And at $10 a pop (without the tubs), it's definitely worth your time and dough to try them out.

I, for one, cannot get behind MWF. I think the lather sucks and the improvement to skin tone is negligible. However, with the hordes of people who love the stuff, I think my negative comments on that front may be ignored. To each his/her own.

    Cheers,

    Ogie

Also, I just tried Prairie Creations today and check out the thread of that topic as well as my SOTD from today for my opinion on that.

I too really like tallow soaps. However, i recently got some soap from Dan of www.kellsoriginal.com they are glycerin/hemp oil, plus other ingredients.

These make an excellent lather & are first class at cushioning & moisturizing. Definately worth a try.

I heard that tallow will not be allowed to be used in cosmetics ( inc shave products ) in Europe from 2010.

I've read somewhere that it is going to be allowed, but more tightly regulated. I think that is partially behind some of the reformulations (conjecture). But, I don't think it will be outright banned.

Better start buying and vacuum storing Tabac pucks to last for the next 50 years.

Ogie, not to belabor the point, but neither Cade nor Haslinger, nor any of the French soaps you mentioned, contain any tallow...not to say they aren7t great soaps, I'm sure they are.

Of course, tallow alone does not make a good soap. Attention to quality, care for the product and listening to customers make a good soap.

DONT GIVE UP ON GLYCERINE SOAPS! I love tallow and glycerine soaps. Depends on mood and razor. So don't give up forever on glycerines - come back to them when you are bored with those awesome tallow soaps and want strong scents, slick later and close shaves.

Definitely try QED glycerine soaps - Wild Orange is my favorite, but Limes, sandlewood and many others are great. All essential oil creations and just awesome performance, and I find them very protective.

HBS is quite nice too - my favorite so far is pina colada though I like old spice too. These are closer to MB but I like them a tad more. The QED is really different I think.

As for tallow, my favorites are (this week):

DRH Arlington, AOS lemon, C&S 88, Penhaligons EF (followed closely by many many others).
