I don't think you can go backwards. When I started using shave soaps and a brush many many years ago, I started with Williams, and was fat, dumb and happy, not knowing what else existed outside my universe. I Probably tried well over 100 soaps and creams since then. I still have more than I need. It's one part of this hobby you can enjoy without spending a small fortune, It's not like a Jnat, or DGLP, or a custom razor...It's soap and the possibilities are endless.

I finally broke down, and picked up a puck of VDH, probably in Walgreens not too long ago. I was disappointed tbh. Now, calm down...That's me, and YMMV....It's one of the few soaps I don't use at all. It's banished to underneath the counter in the bathroom. I feel sorry for it. It's not it's fault. Between that and Williams, I'd have to give the edge to Williams. I guess you really can't go backwards....

Tune in next week to see what else is banished.

I've always seen VDH as the MD 20/20 of shaving soaps. It does the job and it does the job well, but there are much more refined products out there.

I am a Williams nut, always have been. I tried the VDH and did not like it. I must advise that my more recent experience is that investing in a tub of Razorock XXX is EXTREMELY more rewarding and is just as economical, if not more, than pounding cheap pucks and adding glycerine to make it work! I still use a puck of Williams as a rock on the bottom of the mug, no matter the soap! The Razorock is awesome. SRD has it! JMHO

In my brief time, I've tried a New York shaving cream, nice but pricey, Shart Shave, nice but pricey and VDH soap, nice but cheap. Weren't very comfortable shaving but I figured my technique would improve. Then I tried heating some glycerin soap from a craft store in a double boiler, adding some benntonite clay and EO's. End result was a soap that works well for me, slick and moisturizing. Aha, that's what it's supposed to feel like! Taking it one step further, I add a drop of liquid glycerin and a dab of the fancy shave cream to my cup. Whip up some homemade, transfer to the cup, mixt it all up and a slick, smooth uberlather.
Try it, it completes the golden triangle, good, cheap, fast.

I have had a chance to use it for about a week now. It work just fine for what it is, inexpensive shave soap. I have been able to produce a good lather and it provides pretty good glide. I prefer the Proraso over this and I prefer the scent of the VDH over Palmolive cream. I will be spending some time at Imperial Shaving in Madina in a couple weeks and will have to get a premium soap, you know just for comparison sake. I will keep the VDH around its not bad but its not great either suffice it to say it works. I do think it face lathers better than it bowl lathers alteast so far. I will keep experimenting. I love this shaving disorder.
