    Default linnen substitute?

I'm using a poor man strop. Wondering what I should use to substitute for linen, newspaper on glass?

I don't want to buy a nice double hanging strop yet as im still nicking a lot.

You could use a strip of denim jeans...rough side preferred.

SRD's hanging fabric strop is $50 and you can replace the fabric cheap.
Don't know if that helps, but you can also purchase leather for it when you are ready.

Go to a junk yard & get a decent looking seat belt harness, cut the size you want,,
    or
spring for a decent strop & be careful,,,,

Nothing like the threat of messing up a $200 strop to make you be very very careful ;-)

Of course after this statement our English brethren are wondering how many you have to sell...

I've used an ordinary bath towel, with great success. Getting it flat is the only challenge.

I'd try this first since it's free and easy - I'd imagine that almost everybody has a pair of jeans that are pretty trashed and could be recycled in this manner. Curiously, I use my homemade denim strop exclusively despite having some nice leather ones.

I buy light weight canvas at fabric stores and soften it, works well. Most fabric stores will have different weights and weaves of cotton canvas, denim and others that work well.
