Thanked: 402Soap basically?
Particularly non lathering would be sodium stearate powder.
I made a good compound with aluminium oxide and shaving cream.Last edited by 0livia; 05-17-2009 at 02:24 PM.

Thanked: 171I was going to apply it to my balsa paddle with mineral oil like I did with Chris L's chromium oxide. Would this not work?

Thanked: 13245I have been thinking of two ways of using this,,,,
The same as the Cr powder which I mix with neatsfoot oil and apply to a leather strop..
And my other thought was to create a pasted linen strop by spraying one with starch and dusting it with the powder....
Thoughts????

Seems to me that starch spray idea would work fine. If you are concerned that it might not work well and could mess up a nice piece of linen you could try it on a scrap piece of cloth like old blue jeans or something. Another thing that crossed my mind was spray adhesive but that might create more problems in that it would probably seal the linen and prevent the powder from being impregnated into the fibers.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

In my college days I used to use Cerium Oxide all the time for rock polishing. It is a superior polisher compared to levigated alumina which we normally used. As I recall its not yellow though, kind of a beige color. I remember it as being pretty expensive. we used to get ours from a place called Griegers in Pasadena, Ca. I don't know if they still exist but they are a lapidary supplies outfit. It came as a powder.

Thanked: 13245I just want to mention here, this really isn't some magic powder, it is just another arrow in the quiver for the hunt of a smooth shave....
If you are thinking that a pasted strop of any kind will make up for mediocre honing,,, it will not....

Thanked: 402I've been playing a bit with the 1 - 2 micron version today.
It is so very fine that I think you would not even need the 0.5 micron.
Feels much finer than CrOx.
Applied on an old leather strop I had my problems, but that may have been for the strop not liking it much in a cream soap base. Guess it is better on linen. It worked very well on a hard hone and with a microfiber cloth for polishing the entire blade.

Thanked: 5Has anyone gotten a hold of this pure powder yet? Mind to comment how it compares to CrO and maybe the Dovo white paste?
