Thanked: 2209A couple of years ago Keith said on his wedsite that the mixture he used was lanolin and glycerin.

Would pure glycerin do the trick?

Thanked: 346As I recall, glycerine is hydroscopic - it absorbs moisture from the air. So your strop will be permanently damper than ambient, and the paste may never really dry out.

Well I applied the abrasive with strop dressing. I had to use a bit more than I would have liked to create a relatively unique distribution. Tested it on the Tonsorial right after a touchup honing. After 20 trips I could notice a difference in sharpness. I achieved an optimum after about 40. Unfortunately I can't shave-test it until I get the Filly and the little frameback I got from Ivo up to snuff. I believe they are N8k shave-ready but I want to make sure (shave tests) before taking them to the 0.5.

Thanked: 346It should get better, I've noticed that I get much better results after the paste has had a few days to dry, though it helps to use it while it's still soft to help distribute the paste evenly and get the paste really worked into the strop.

Good to know. Thanks MP. There will be at least 2 days between my last use and next use of the bench hone, as I am shave-testing the Filly and then the Eskiltuna, so that should do the trick.

I have several types of quality shoe care products. One of them is a beeswax type shake well before use, one is a white paste of some sort. I believe you could use something similar as a paste carrier...

Hey Firestart,
Am I right in thinking you can use any chromium oxide powder as a 0.5 micron paste?
I may have to follow your lead if this is the case as I can get the powder cheap enough but can't find any paste manufactureres in the UK. Let me know how you get on with the paste medium.
Cheers
Rob
