Rob, you are absolutely correct. In combination with Tony's strop dressing, I got some GREAT results with that abrasive on a leather bench-hone. My razors are reaching a new level of "sharp". I ordered a full 1lb to be split 3-4 ways between several Greater Toronto Area members and myself.

OK, cheers pal.
The powder is dirt cheap here in the UK. You can get it from art supply stores and craft supply stores as it is used to colour pottery and give the green colour to artists paint.
Here is the link for one supplier in the UK, if anyone is interested.

Yeah, thats my concern Ernestrome.
I guess Chromium oxide instrinsically comes in that particle size. Much like various types of stones prefer to crstalise at a specific grit, depending on how they were formed.

Thanked: 346There may be multiple grits around, but if it's that cheap it can't hurt to pick some up and give it a try.
CO was used to make green paint way back when, and some guys had a flat board painted with green paint that they used as a finishing hone.

Don't be too sure about that. Look at the diamond pastes. Same medium but they have 1.0, .5, .25 and who knows what other particle sizes. However if one of our members has access to an MS lab and expertise necessary for testing, I'd love to hear the results. Keith must be getting his chromium oxide SOMEWHERE. I'd still buy it from him if I were you (especially since he was VERY accomodating with the shipping arrangements) but it's good to have an alternative in case he decides to stop carrying the product, retires, goes OOB or whatever.

Thanked: 7Aye, i regret not ordering some along with my strop. In general i would prefer to source things locally as there is an environmental cost involved in shipping things around the world.

Well I have just had the best shave ever after using my pasted bench hone. 1 micron diamond paste on it. I was a bit concerned as the paste was not water based and formed a wax like layer on the surface. Managed to scrap off the excess and stropped up for 20 strokes. My razor has NEVER glided over my face like that before. Previously I have shaved after coming off the Japanese 8K waterstone. Can't wait to get some chrome oxide and go down to 0.5 micron. If that fails I will paste the other bench hone with 0.5 paste.
