    Default Chromium Oxide On Felt

I just purchased the Modular Paddle at SRD and wanted to know how many out there have attempted to apply ChrOx to the Felt paddle with the crayon (from SRD)? It seems to me that the softness of the felt would require a heavier application (without overdoing it) of ChrOx for it to be effective. Or is my assumption wrong? Is felt even a good material to apply ChrOx as a finisher before stropping? I have read alot about the diamond spray and felt but haven't found too much on ChrOx and felt. Thanks in advance!

    DamianRT,

I have used CrOx pastes on felt, and it works very well.

For the first felt strop, I mixed CrOx powder with neatsfoot oil and painted this on with an artists paint brush in a series of X's. I then rubbed the paste into the felt with a micro-fbre cloth and left it overnight to 'cure'.

For the second felt strop I used the SRD crayon.

I have found that the SRD crayon is not quite soft enough to applly to felt direct, so I cut off a small peice and mashed it up with neats-foot oil, and then applied this slacker paste to the felt with the paint brush as before.

If you want to use the crayon 'neat', use the edge of the crayon, it is easier that way.

You don't need to have a homogenous green carpet of CrOx on the strop, and the recommendations on SRP seem to be to use a light hand when appying CrOx to a strop substrate, whether felt, linen, cotton or leather.

    Good luck !

    Have fun !

    Best regards

    Russ

    Default CroX

For future felts, you can also get CroX in the form of spray from the SRD site. It comes in both 4 and 8 oz bottles. Easy to use too.

I like the diamond spray on felt but chrom ox works well too. If I only had one felt I would use it for the diamond spray that came with your modular. I would use the chrom ox on the rough leather pad. Just my preference as I suspect one will work as well on one platform as another. IOW, you can't go wrong.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I think the diamond benefits from the cushion of the felt-- less harsh edge, IME-- but it will definitely work either way.

    Default ChrOx Felt

I tried applying the crayon directly to the felt and working it in with an old (moist) t-shirt. It is dispersed pretty evenly throughout and appears as a lite application. I will try to post a picture of it by tomorrow to get some input.

    Gents,

I'm a newb who has taken an active interest in learning all I can about proper honing and polishing. I'm putting together a home-made modular strop, and I'd like to have a balsa side for CrOx, a felt side for Diamond spray (1.0), and another felt side for diamond spray (.25). My question is in regards to the type of felt used.

Is the felt that comes in sheets from the craft store good enough for this purpose? I'm wondering if you guys use some sort of high end felt I haven't heard of...

Thanks in advance for the help, this forum is fantastic!

No. Craft store felt is a different animal altogether. It's way too soft and not dense enough.

If you have your heart set on a DIY paddle with hard felt you might check with Don at SRD, I think he sells replacement felt for the hanging strops that you could cut up. You might be better off to re-evaluate the project and consider just getting a modular strop from Don.

I have no idea where they source the stuff, but hard felt suitable for stropping is not a common item that you are going to find just anywhere.
