Leather/fabric strop question
I was watching vids, in the stropping wiki to become a more responsible razor steward, and wondered how many here use a fabric strop, in addition to the essential leather strop. One guy, in a vid, said they didn't use the fabric one. I have only owned a single-leather one, up til now, but plan on getting a full size quality strop at a later date.
Also: Is it also true that you go from "hone to fabric to leather", in that order?Last edited by rostfrei; 09-16-2010 at 09:05 PM.

Leather/Fabric
Hello, rostfrei:
Most gentlemen here strop on fabric and then leather. I usually do 25 strokes on fabric and 75 on leather.

Obie

Yep I'm pretty much with the Obie routine. I do 60 on leather.

Thanked: 983The first strop I bought and still own was is a two sided affair, but the 'cloth' side is acarborundum impregnated leather strap. I used this in the early days until I found it seemed to be doing more harm than good. I've since only ever used leather. At some point I will source some heavy linen of webbing straps and make myself a 'proper' double sided strop. For now though, it's just leather for me and it seems to be doing just fine that way. I'd be trying a 'cloth' side just out of curiosity more than anything else.

I do 50 fabric and 50 leather. I always do fabric first without exception. I also hit it 20 round trips on the leather following rinsing and drying the blade after the shave.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I will definitely look at getting a two-sided strop, when I enter the marketplace, even if I use the fabric side less frequently.

I have a 2.5 inch TM with linen and latigo. Personally, I love the feel of stropping on linen. So for me it's hones, linen then leather. After cleaning and drying my razor I strop on linen only to make sure the edge is clean and dry.

By the way, you mentioned a full size strop. Many folks prefer a 3 inch strop, but take your time and try out other widths. I wish I would have gone narrower than my 2.5 inch. It's just personal preference. Dovo has some inexpensive cotton/leather strops.

I do 20 on fabric and 40 on leather before and after a shave. Sometime during the day I also try to run my palm along the leather at least 20 times.
