    Newspaper actually works well in a pinch. Try to use a sheet that has lots of ink on it, like a dark picture.

    I'm glad you got your real strop back.
    Never used a bible as a strop but I used to roll my own cigarettes and when I would run out of paper the unprinted pages in the front and back were just the right thickness for cigarette paper...I know. I'm going to hell.

    Interestingly, printer's ink nowadays is made from a rubberlike polymer. Perhaps this is responsible for the 'draw', and the carbon or metal pigments for abrasion.
