Thanked: 983I'm gonna have to say, "One that I made!" and the reason for that is I only make a single sided strop, so that relieves you of having to choose what side to use first....
In all seriousness, the best strop is the one that has all the qualities you're looking for. Do you like a firm draw, soft draw, medium draw? What width suits your taste? Length? Paddle or hanging? Single or double sided? Read up on some strop reviews on this forum to find out what some of the choices are out there for you.

Thanked: 2Draw, I really don't know probably medium to firm. Length, I have no preference as to medium or long, don't want extremely short. I do want a double sided with linen, or similar, hanging strop with paddle handle. 3" wide preferably. I have been eyeing the Illinois 127, SRD 3" latigo. Do either of those fit the bill?

They shou.ld both do a ood job
If pressed the SRP is probably the better one but both will do fine
Now if you choose to buy for budget remember that only one of these offewr replacement leather and is cheaper to replace

Thanked: 2Mostly, I want something that is of good quality, but that I won't have a come-a-part if I nick the crap out of it. (only about 15 shaves thus far) I am confident enough to buy a good strop at this point

Any good quality strop will do the job. What you're preferences in a strop are won't be known until you work with one or more. Go to strop reviews here and you'll find guys giving their take on various brands, sizes, lengths. Give it a read and see what you come up with.
Personally I like a longer strop with a draw but not a draw that will have me worried that the razor is going to come out of my hand. Moderate I guess. The SRD Premium 1 fills the bill for me there. Lot of good strops out there though so read the reviews and that may help you make an informed decision.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I have to +1 with Jimmy, I have lot's of strops, but I really like SRD's Premium 1. It's buttery soft leather with just the right amount of draw. Not too much, not too little, so while your stropping, you actually feel like your accomplishing something...The linen that comes with it is awesome too. It's a top quality strop, and I believe all you need to do is rub it with the palm of your unwashed hand from time to time...I wouldn't do anything more than that to it....

Strop
If you are only going to have one strop then I would say the SRD modular paddle strop just because you can change the pads and that makes it a versatile strop.

Thanked: 72Lots of good strops out there idd, but if you are only getting one strop I would definitely buy one with a leather and a linen side, imo leather only is not the way to go

Thanked: 993I'm with Jimmy and Zib. The SRD Premium I is my favorite strop. I have the hard felt on the back of mine, but that is because I use the webbed fabric on one of my others.
If i was only ordering one strop, I'd go with the Premium I, and the webbing OR the linen. I hear that their new linen option is quite nice.
