Looking for Neatsfoot?????
Hey Gents,
I have been recently looking to score some neatsfoot oil for my strops. Yeah I could of bought off the web but shipping costs, waiting on shipment, etc. I decided to look locally and wasn't haven't much luck.
Eventually I walked into a Tractor Supply Company store and found a large selection of leather care products located near the horse bridles n' such. They had a few different brands of neatsfoot to choose from.
So, if you dont have a TSC near try a pet store or any place that sells horse supplies. Also, be sure to purchase the PURE neatsfoot oil and NOT the neatsfoot oil compound as this will do more damage to your precious strop than good.
Now I gotta go attend to my ol' Geo Worthington strop that I just acquired....something about old broken in leather that just warms the sole.

Tack and feed/horse supply stores are great brick and mortar vendor as you found out. Although I've found it to cheaper online even with shipping, without the sales tax online. At least in my area.
Side note, if you ride a motorcycle, tack and feed stores are also good place for deerskin riding gloves too.

I found mine at the local grocery store by the shoe polish. I don't remember how much it cost, so it must have been reasonable. Also, a little of that stuff goes a long way, so I think that one bottle may about be a lifetime supply.

I have also been looking for locally supplied Neatsfoot Oil in the Northern Virginia/DC area and have had no luck. The nearest Tractor Supply Co. is about a 45 min drive. I found it on the Sears website, but when I went to Sears, it turned out to be only available online. Any ideas? Also, do Lexol and Neatsfoot provide the same results?

It used to be that you could find neatsfoot just about anywhere that sold leather products, shoe store always had it. Anymore you have to look for the stuff. If you have a Tandy leather store, they should have it, if not try the boot, saddle type places they should have it as well.

Funny, I have maybe 20+ strops. Kanayama, SRD, Tony Miller, Kenrup, Solingen, Dubl Duck (vintage) etc... I've never once applied neetsfoot oil to any of them. I never had the need. Once in a while, I rub them with the palm of my hand. I did buy an old ebay special that needed some work. I cleaned it with Saddle soap, then applied neetsfoot, only because the leather was dry. To each his own. but tbh, applying oil isn't really needed. More or Less draw on a strop doesn't seem to make much difference in the end product imho. Depending on the strop, it could help break it in, like we did with Basball gloves when I was kid, Did the same with ice skates....(I grew up in the North)
Lately, I've been using a custom Tony Miller Horsehide, One of the last ones he made.
It's great, and has little or or no draw.
Enjoy...Last edited by zib; 02-13-2011 at 03:21 PM.
