    It's pretty easy to replace the leather part - afik they sell those at a good price.
    BTW have you been conditioning it after sanding - that darkens the leather. The key is to use very little repeatedly (whatever you want to use e.g. strop conditioning, neatsfoot oil, just palm rub).

    Edit: Note that even if you don't want to splurge for replacing the leather you can shorten it and still end up with a bigger strop than the various 'intro strops'. Perfect example why buying the best strop you can afford, right away is usually the right thing to, and the cheapest too.
