How thick do you make the wedges? I'm just starting making scales. I've seen a few videos on making scales, even Charles Lewis'. The videos mention tapering the wedge, but none indicate the wedge thickness.
I have seen where people say half the thickness of the scale.

But that is also my biggest hurdle in scale making for me.

If i make the wedge too small and not tapered right my blades then don't align good when i close them.

So what i did at the beginning is taper them a little bit at a time, check it out before pinning and so on.

I hope someone else with more experience can answer this question better as i also need advice on this wedge part.

    IT DRIVES ME BANANASSSSS.

Is no set demension.depends on the blade, one size will not fit all.Scales need to be custom fit to the blade for them to be perfect.

It's just looks so simple when he does it.

Where would you get 0-80 x ½ machine screws and nuts and the tools you need to do that part?

Thank you so much for the advice.

Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.

Wedge thickness depends on how low you want the blade to fit in the scales. Just fit the blade a few times while making the scales and wedge until you're satisfied.

Hi, fantastic work for your scales. I am about to start tryin to make some. Hope they will look as half good as yours!.
For the small screw and bolts try some hobbyshop if you can't wait for microfastner.

distribution aux modelistes have some small screws and bolts that can fit and 1/16 brass rod for cheap as well.

    Keep up the good work!

Took a little break from making scales and shined up some vintage blades and pinned them in.

One is an Acrylic clear blue and the other is a wood one finished with shellac.

Most hardware stores, Ace or True Value around here, have suitable screws and nuts but I have not seen the wrenches. Some even have pinning supplies. In Canada I have no clue.

Also, it appears no one has mentioned the Breathing hazard of working with Bone, as i understand it, its VERY important to wear a respirator when Sawing Sanding or drilling bone so as to not breathe the bone particles... this may also apply to horn though I am not that familiar...
