    Lessons learned..

You didn't use any really esoteric tools or techniques, which reminds me to KISS. I have a shop full of cool tools, but that doesn't mean I have to use them. An old piece of laminate flooring and a few corks.. and you have a jig to straighten warped scales. Now, if I could only straighten my warped Friodur like that, I'd be far ahead of the curve...

Patience in working through problems.. that might be the greatest factor in weeding out the serious from the casual.

Inventory helps.. The fact that you had materials and old scales on hand made it easier to test fixes without committing.

Throwing ideas out to the forums.. you got some great feedback along the way. Might not have used all of for this project, but added to your 'book of tricks' should you face something similar in the future is just as good.

I probably learned more than is coming to mind. so thanks again and thanks to SRP for making it possible to have such a dialogue!!
Mike you have done a good job capturing the essence of this experience. Thanks for your input. Hopefully we'll meet at a NE Gathering sometime.

In the interest of full disclosure:
I noticed after a few hours post-shave, and unfortunately post -post office visit, some irritation. I have notified the owner and offered to remedy the hone job.
I feel bad that I let him down.

Hold that thought until the owner has it and gives it a shave or three. Your irritation could have been from a gojillion things other than a bad hone. The slightest misappropriation of pressure, weak stretch, planetary misalignment.. and boom! You got a hot spot on your skin.

The effort you put in, and result it yielded is far from being quantified as "let down'.

Wish you were closer.. I could use some mentoring..

Agreed! The rash could be anything. And thanks for the ongoing narrative - shows your problem-solving approach as well as reminding everyone of the need to slow down sometimes and think trough a number of options before charging ahead on a project. Also some of your solutions are really creative!

Mentors are always awesome. I'm in Southern CA -Laguna Hills specifically. Half way between Los Angeles and San Diego. I'm interested in restoration and honing but figure I should stay with SR shaving and stropping for now. So far so good. Lynn did my first razor and its awesome. Just trying to maintain that edge.

When you get ready to purchase some hones and start honing and want to learn the "in and outs" get in touch with me. I am here in the OC as well. I have just about every hone you can mention in my collection and it could save you a lot of time and money to figure which way you want to go (i.e. natural or synthetic) ahead of time...

WP34 thank you that would be great. I'd like to get into that around the begining of the new year.
