Wow, that is simple. I thought there must be more to it than that. I bet that fills the ol' kitchen with an interesting smell! I'm going to have to keep an eye out for a horn I can cook. :D
You'd have to cut the horn length wise, first. Just cut it in half I suppose. Never did it myself, but cuddarunner posted a video of some gentlemen working with horns.
They cut them , heated them in a fire till mailable, and made things from them, don't remember what, I was more interested in the procedure.
Well while this isn't about making scales, it is about how to work with horn. While the method of heating is a bit different, the clamping is the same!
I hope all will enjoy.:tu

I stumbled upon this as well and thought it was well worth passing on.

Thanks Roy
Very cool process that is. Thanks for sharing.
I re read that brush thread and chuckled at some of the comments made. Ah yes, the o ring debacle.. Smile every time I use that floppy ole brush still. And got some nice words from Walleyeman Ray in there as well. Didn't even know at that time how amazing his brushes were and how much I would grow to want one..
Chatted with him a few times after, as well as Bill about brush builds and learned a lot..thankfully.
Yeah! Bill, Ray AND his son were regulars. Great and talented guys. :D
Quick clean up on a W&B.

Flossed out the pivot, tightened up the pins and gave the blade a polish.

Fun.
Very nice Matt. [emoji482]
Did you miss the tail, or is it just badly pitted.?
It's just some oxidation.. and bad lighting.

Looks great, Matt! Say! Those dots look familiar! ;)

Ahhhh, very good then ol chap.
What are the dots for anyhoo...?
Yup.. just to keep track. I draw on my blades when I'm honing to keep track of issues. My mind wanders...
Just cleaned up the frowning duck..

After Breadknifing, and lots of scraping and flossing the scales.. Still gotta clean up the blade..

Boy the camphor smell when i rinsed them..
Should that shoulder be trimmed now?
Yeah..extensive honewear. Into the stabilizer. Tapered to the toe.......rotten scales..
Sorry Matt! Wind chime fodder.
No worries. You seem to have some better ones. I could send you one....
I am glad MikeT is not here to see this! Where :shrug:IS MikeT???
True, but something can still be done with it, beside throwing it to the wind. [emoji6]
I just KNEW you were gonna say that! Attachment 245653 :roflmao
Finished honing the Herder.
Lots of leather.
Cuts through arm hair, like Moses did the red sea.

Test shave in the morning.
I'm with Tom on this one, I could see if it was a really old rare razor but this is not the case, lots of ducks around.

I suppose my wind-chime pile just got pretty light! :)
I'm slowly building my pile o chimes, but I'm gettin thar. [emoji56]
Done through 2 1k hones, the brown turd, etc and so forth. Still being in shorts, I am using the tops of my thigh near the knee to test. My left arm is growing back in nicely! :rofl2:
Simply approach the edge to a leg-hair and it jets off into oblivion rather than feel the wrath.

Might do Captain Zero's 1 to 12k gig with another layer of tape added....Just to see?
Yeah no wind chime pile for the duck yet. Ill try to hone it just for kicks. I knew it wasn't pretty when i bought it but it was cheap and I've been trying to find one for a while. They are kinda expensive these days..
Where do i find this technique sir? I was gonna just do a little more grinding with the novoculite to bring it down before it tried setting a bevel.
Well, if that stabilizer is run down into the edge, it will 'thunk' down every time you make a stroke and make a fast frown there. It has to be gone, IMO.
Outback will relate. It seems he took a Dremel cut-off or something and chopped a slash in the bottom of the stabilizer to the edge, angled toward the toe.
Instant gone pesky stabilizer! ;)
Incidentally, if anyone wants a few blades to play with, let me know. I have a few left. I will have more soon.
Outback has sucked 'em all up! :rofl2:
Ok i think ill give that a shot. It will definitely be quicker then using the stone. Thanks!
He showed a pair in one of these threads. I thought it was genius to get a worn one working good that way. Too damn simple! :)
Well have faith sir. My ugly duckling may shave yet again. If not I'm up to 5 in the chime pile.
Yup, the Dremel, with either the cut off, or one of the stone bits will do a good job, just be mindful of your rotation with respect to the blade. You want to be grinding such that you are spinning off the blade towards the tail, if you know what I mean. Were it your tires, you'd be driving towards the tail kinda thing, not the toe.
Oh Dremel discussion, I'm out, have fun gents.
