Nice find! I recently just got my first Sheffield frame back as well. Interesting blades.
The spine is a separate piece so it is a real frame back. Faux framebacks are just ground with a T shape to give the appearance of a separate piece on the spine.
Black is always rust. Patina is a light grey color and just on the very surface of the metal. Unfortunately on eBay you will see rust described as patina by sellers that are dishonest or don't know any better. I would try to clean it up some and keep a coat of oil on it (or at least keep it clean and dry). If the spine is brass maybe some cleaning will make the yellow color pop more.

If I was correct, it is only by guessing correct. I really don't know all of the different styles yet, so this little exchange has helped today.
I'm with you on the rust. I worked on a Frederick Reynolds that had spotting, I was able to mostly remove it. I should have figured this one would need similar attention.
Cleaning up a cool little letter punch I found in my stash of totes from that locker purchase. Works like a spring loaded center punch.
