I'm not sure about what that etch would hold up against. I'm personally on my first restore, and not finished yet.
IIRC, .5 micron is much more fine than 2k grit (possibly around 30k grit equivalent?). So yea, that won't do very much, very fast. The 0000 grade steel wool is the really fine stuff, not what you scrub dishes with. I doubt a light scrubbing, enough to remove the Evapo-Rust residue, would bother the etch a great deal if you used the steel wool. And the lapping film you have will polish off any scratches that it makes (assuming I'm correct about it's grit).
But again, I'm new to restoration as well. So please defer to others advice regarding the etching.
Added:I'd hate for someone to ruin a razor because of my lack of experience & resulting advice. I try to only chime in on things I'm confident about conveying accurately.Last edited by Crawler; 06-14-2015 at 09:17 AM. Reason: Spelling & Disclaimer.

Thanked: 3215You can get Evapo Rust, at Harbor Freight. It last a long time and can be reused, the rust will settle to the bottom, just pour off the top. Had the same gallon for a few years now.
I just keep some in an old water bottle for blades. A couple hours soak is good for most blades but usually over night them.
I have even had good luck with just repeated spot dabbing with a wet Q tip on pitting if you don’t plan on removing all the pitting.
Here is an old thread on Evapo Rust.

If it helps, here are a couple pics of my razor that was a candidate for rust removal & rescale. At this point, it has had a few rounds of Evapo-Rust soak, along with subsequent rubbing with 0000 steel wool and/or 2k sand paper.
Currently shown after a 48hr dip. Finally broke down & got some 200 grit paper, for the deep blemishes.
Still working up the confidence to sand the etch side with the more aggressive 200 grit paper. See the greying from the Evapo-Rust?
Notes: For color reference, the towel is a "pale pea-green". The scales formerly on the ERN were crappy & not original, probably homemade. The razor pictured next to the ERN is a Tufpug wearing the ERN's clothes, they came from the same seller. I put that razor in the pic for reference of one that hasn't been soaked & tortured.Decades away from full-beard growing abilities.
