The Butchered Blade

Very good idea Tom on the rubber automotive hose. I'm sure I can improvise as I do not have any old hose at the moment but I'm sure I have something that would work just as well. I know I have something out there in all my junk. I need to clean my garage out one day.
Looks like a double concave blade ya got there. it should look good when it is done. I don't like sanding either but it must be done occasionally. I don't mind the honing though. It is the satisfaction of the accomplishment I get when I do sharpen one. It looks very good so far! I'll have to sand my Wosty down some to make it shine a little more since it will be clothed in some nice scales. I hope my new wedge comes out to my satisfaction also. Perhaps I should make me an outback gizzy! :)

So no more Dremel stuff. Some dry sanding with the big end of my little sanding stick, some worn 400 on the end pitting and a bunch of 600 to even things out. Then, some dry 600 with my hose thingy and back to the WD40.
This blade is thin, so I think some of the pitting will stay on the end, but will go through the 1500 to see.
I may go back to the 600 or 1000 and do the crocus/CroOx as it works better with a slightly rough finish.
With this side to finish and the other side to do, I will report back tomorrow!

Darn tootin those ducks are thin on the bottom half! I left some slight unevenness on mine for the same reasons. I can live with a little character more than a foiled razor.

My main issue with the double-ground ones is trying to preserve the 'belly' as that is what makes the razor work, IMO.
I have seen lots which were sanded off. I cannot see it working anymore as that is done, FME
You see lots of miracles done with old wedges. Notsomuch with these thin ones.
If you see a miracle on one of these, it may or may not hone or shave as it used to.
Condition condition. Always buy condition, you bunch of busted blade losers! :soapbox:

Well, I got a chance to work on my scales. I had to hand drill my pin holes since I don't have an accurate enough drill press yet. I started one just a little bit on one side & then I used my digital calipers I measured on the opposite side & drilled a little at a time until they went through & lined up. The 1st pic is of the older set I was making & the 2nd & 3rd are of the new ones I'm making.

Thats some cool looking grain and color to that wood. Like the shape too.
What finish are you going to use.

I don't know yet. Some Tru-Oil might be good for it then let it dry & then polish some Ren wax in them but then again, I might like a BBS finish on 'em. I have some recon Bloody Red Jasper & also some recon Arizona Turquoise but I think the Bloody Red Jasper would set the cocobolo off really nice with some brass collars & silver pins.
