Just a follow up..
The Hess is back in shaving rotation. I reset the bevel and sharpened the old mule yesterday.
Not a bad shave.. Just a few nicks on the noggin.
I was feeling pretty proud i must say. This razor came from Whipped Dog, and about halfway through the sanding process i realized it was a pretty stupid move to ruin a professionally sharpened edge just to remove a few tiny pits. Restoring it to shave ready at least gave me the feeling i didn't ruin a slightly expensive purchase. Live and learn..
The blade has a tiny warp which i didn't realize until i looked at the bevel after about 40 strokes on a 1200 diamond plate. The bevel was wide in the toe and the hone marks on the spine were wide in the middle. I was using paintbrush strokes so i switched up to a rolling X.
Now i understand why the X strokes help to insure an even hone on a warped blade. The hone wear doesn't look ridiculous but its definitely a rookie move not checking the wear from the 1200 grit sooner. I also caught the shoulders a bit trying to sharpen the heel.
In the essence of humility i am uploading the following post honing pics. Feel free to rip me a new one regarding what i did wrong.
I have a habit of soaking up too much information too quickly and then shooting the moon.
I do occasionally hit the moon.. but not always.
The beleaguered Hessenbruch...

Thanked: 480What you did wrong? Nothing. Unless of course you didn't learn anything in the process. =P
