The original scales are the dyed horn the Sheffield makers were so fond of, not tortoise, so other than not being able to save the scales you have not lost anything rare. Who was the vendor and what is the name of the acrylic that you used? Looks like molten fire.

    karlej,
Thank you, I think you may be right. Someone else has mentioned that to me also. Maybe I jumped the gun, sorry folks!

The scales are from a company called Woodturningz, they have a lot of different colors. Ask for them to cut the spindle
    into 1/8 inch slabs.

Here's a link to where the scale material was purchased.

    Inlace Acrylester Spindles - Woodturningz

As Freddie said it comes in many, many colors. The one he used is called Molten Metal, it's the same that my custom brush handle was made with.

If you want the 1.5"X1.5" blocks cut into 1/8" thick blanks, contact Fritz via the webpage and he'll take good care of you. (While you won't get a discount and neither will I/tell him that Roy sent you) There is a small charge for the custom cut but it's well worth it. They have a Huge band saw so the kerf loss isn't all that bad. You should be able to make 3-4 sets of scales at a minimum.

I hope this has been of some help.

OH! They won't custom cut their selection of woods due to concerns about warpage. Just FYI.
