Thanked: 5This whole process looks pretty interesting. I've missed some posts in the middle, but just to make a comment on people staying away from ammonia based media. Take a look at this: Nitridization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nitriding steel is usually done to harden the steel much more, and is done in a hot oven with ammonia gas that breaks down and allows nitrogen to penetrate the surface.
So in other words, I'm not sure that ammonia would have any effect on steel at room temperatures, and if it does it would only serve to harden the steel more.
On another note, once I get some razors to restore this looks like a much better option than doing everything by hand or dremel.

complete razor in tumbler ??
Hi all,
I'd like to get started on a SR for which I ab-so-lutely want to keep the handle intact.
Did anyone try to put a complete SR in their brass tumbler ?
I was thinking of coating the handle (celluloid I think) first with a sort of latex (the liquid stuff you can easily peel off later) in order to protect the handle.
Thanks,

And this is why you want to chuck the whole thing into a unwatched machine made for banging things against each others hard for extended periods?
You might want to test it first with some similar blade you won't grieve losing. Just a thought, as I don't have a tumbler myself. It seemed to lose rust and patina, which are quite hard by themselves. Not sure how much would a peelable latex coat protect the scales.Last edited by ursus; 10-08-2009 at 09:47 AM.

Thanked: 13246Been there done that, it doesn't work, it is actually in the thread somewhere...
What happens is the media gets jammed up between the scales, and the blade, so there is no circulation, no circulation = no cleaning action....
It is also a major PITA to get all that dust and media back out of the pivot....
