My goodness man... did you have to give them GENCO... and worse, a King Cutter with such a nice looking etch?
Been looking for one of those for some time now... It would have been a great restore... add to the collection. I am really sorry about that Genco.
I honestly hoped these guys could get it done
In the old days, most cutters knew razors were ground/sharpened differently than any other cutlery... bar none.
But today, most modern blade sharpening outfits have no idea the geometry of a straight razor or how the edge is formed, so they treat it like any other knife and simply grind away until it cuts paper... cutting paper is all well and fine, good for cutting meet, vegetables and whatnot... but sharp enough to comfortably cut whiskers on a mans face is something most modern cutlers do not understand...

Thanked: 20I also wished I had seen this thread earlier and could have given a heads up. I had dealt with them years ago and while they did an OK job on chain saw blades, they really screwed up a set of chisels I handed them. One must have been almost 1/8" out of square. I've also seen how they sharpen their commercial cutlery and would never bring them a knife.
I spoke with them about a year ago when trying to ID some hones and they told me that the only employee who might have had a clue had retired and moved to Italy. It confirmed my impression this would not be a good place to have a razor honed. In fact I couldn't find anyone local I felt was qualified.
I am glad however glad to see there are more ST. Louis SR users than I had thought, and apparently near by. I'd offer to hone but I still don't quite get it. Maybe half the time.Last edited by beenpickin; 10-17-2009 at 03:11 AM.

Sad loss of a Genco
Where's that thread that had all the posts in red saying
" Never ever give your razors to a knife guy to hone on their wheels "The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

Thanked: 37I know this thread is 4 years old but found it while searching for a place to have a straight razor honed around St. Louis. I am about to convert and was researching what I will need over the long term. I also ran into this on Bertarelli's Facebook page back in January of this year.
After a year of training Bertarelli Cutlery is now sharpening Straight Razors hand sharpened up to 10,000 grit then Stropped. 3-4 days $30
I wonder if they have gotten better?
Outside of them, is anyone in the St. Louis/St. Charles county area know of a good honer?

I don't know about St.Loius but there is a Lynn Abrams in Cape that is considered one of the best, as well as two pro honers in K.C. area. Check out the classifieds here on SRP under member services.

In addition, there is going to be a SRP meet-up in K.C. in October. If you are wanting to start shaving with a straight that would be the place to be.Last edited by Leatherstockiings; 09-20-2013 at 10:28 PM. Reason: Showing respect

Thanked: 1936What Leatherstockiings said, gather your stuff between now and then & make the meet. You will find someone there who will most likely hone it for free. The guys place the meet is at is a master himself & I know there will be other pro's there. You will never look back after meeting these guys I promise!
Southeastern Oklahoma/Northeastern Texas helper. Please don't hesitate to contact me.
Thank you and God Bless, Scott

If at all possible MAKE THAT MEET! You will learn more in a few hours than you can by reading and watching videos for months and months!!!!
The few hours I spent with Glen (GSSIXGUN) taught me so much!! I'd been honing and doing a good job but after the Meet, I get very nice compliments on my edges and I'm using the exact same setup! The only difference was the knowledge that Glen passed along helped me get to a higher level as a honer! Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.

I'm uncertain. Not sure I'd even try a knife!?!?
