Thanked: 530If it's spring loaded, it probably can't have two positions (and, the technology to pull that off would cost a metric ****ton to have one custom made)
Also, spring ASSISTED is not illegal, that would be a knife with manual automation of the blade via thumbstud (or the Kershaw back flipper) or some other means of actuating the blade. However, the one pictured here is automatic (Press a button, receive a blade) and that is usually illegal. Knife shows still sell them though, as do most cheap-knife shops... Most quality knife makers don't sell automatics unless you are on duty, or in law enforcement (EG: Benchmade, Kershaw, Boker, etc)

Isn't that illegal? Here if a knife has a spring that causes the blade to come out fast is considered to be illegal.
Ah.... that reminds me the long discussions I had with the lady in the customs department because of the straight razors I bought where she was charging me for importing weapons.
She: "The blade has more than 10cms, so it's a weapon, according to our legislation"
Me: "No, the cutting edge has about 7 cm."
She: "It has more than 10 cm. Our "technicians" measured it"
Me: "They measured it wrong." (sigh)

That's what I was saying, spring assisted would be legal, and you could do 2 positions with it fairly easily, it would just require a second notch to stop it. Of course that would mean having to push it twice to get it to shave position.

Thanked: 530Spring assisted, and button activated aren't the same thing. Spring assisted is legal. Button activated is not.
And there are a myriad of different engineering hurdles in what you are proposing.. I'm not saying it's impossible, just incredibly difficult... Also, what about all the people who vary the scale to blade angle while shaving? Thereisn't one "set" shaving angle...
It's a movie prop, and it's cool... But that's all it is.

I'm not saying to make it automatic, just spring assist. When I said push it twice, I didn't mean push a button twice, I meant push the blade twice. It can be as simple or as complicated as the guy making it wants it to be. I have an idea that I'm sure would work fir having a spring assist with 2 positions, but I am not a knife maker and don't have the tools or the skill to build it. In my experiences with mechanical systems I've found there is generally a simple way and a complicated way of accomplishing the same thing. Of course it wouldn't be perfect for everyone to use, but straight razors in general aren't for everyone. It's just fantasy and talk though.
Of course you could always make it spring assist or automatic with the ability to disable the blade lock when opened, allowing the angle to be changed Luke on an ordinary straight.

I have to think hard enough not to cut myself with a regular razor. If I had an automatic or spring assist I would have change my name to stubby.
