Default My first set of scales (walnut)

Here is my first set of scales. I did a rough cut with a band saw, then did all the rest of the shaping and polishing by hand. I have no access to pins so I'm going to try and make some out of some small aluminum rivets. They'll kind of look like oversized pins.

Don't worry, I will . I'm planning on making the wedge and pinning it in a couple days. The blade is an old J Wiss and Sons.

When you say no access to pins do you mean you can't find anyone who sells?

because one of the guys (probably many) sell washer/pins kits with multiple sets of each. the one nearest me is the invisible edge, but am sure there are guys on here closer to you?

I don't live in your area, but a quick internet search has turned up the following links. These are all links to hobby shops. I would think that most (if not all) have stocks of small brass washers, brass rod, small tools, etc. Give 'em a look.

    Matt,

You need pins? PM me your address and I'll send you an envelope of brass rod, washers and bearing washers for the inside of your pivot.

yeah, geez, don't let lack of a source of pins get in the way. i'd send you some if someone hadn't already offered.

Wow, it always amazes me how generous everybody is on srp. I would definitely take one of you up in your offer, but I already drilled the holes to 1/8, which fits the sleeve of the aluminum rivets I'm using for this set of scales. However, I will for sure pm one of you when I start my next restore. Here's a picture of the rivets I'm using and the blade:

Hopefully you can get an idea of where I'm going with these rivets. I'm going to put on of the domed ends on each side of the scales and then feed the aluminum rod through. I'll cut the ball end off and then tap each side to fit.

Just a heads-up if you are contemplating to use aluminum pins; aluminum is a reactive metal, it does not work well in contact with water and steel.

Read more from a previous post here, or check the SRP search for "steel amunimum" for even more info here.

    Best of luck.
