Yea, I don't have the necessary toys, but I'm curious what the game is.

Thanked: 13245Let's start getting some feedback...
If those of you that tried it could copy and paste these questions into your response it would be great... Remember this is comparing to your past honing on Naniwas...
1. Approximately how many razors had you sharpened on the Naniwas before trying this system =
2. How many have you tried so far using the system =
3. Is this easier =
4. Is this more consistent =
5. Did you use an actual system before trying this one =
Results are hard to quantify so take this with a large grain of salt...
6. Were the results smoother to you face IYHO =
7. Did the edges feel sharper also =
8. It is (probably) a fact that this system would wear out stones faster, knowing that would you still use it =
9. IYHO would using a system like this help Beginners or Experienced people more =
10. This whole system hinges on the fact that the Honer KNOWS what a set bevel is, do you see any way to improve that ????
Any Comments:
Thanks in advance for your answers...

Thanked: 13245To those following along
I honestly don't see much use in laying out this whole thing unless we get mostly positive responses....
If it doesn't work for anyone other than myself, and it seems Neil then why bother pursuing it more..
Also those that are still working on razors, PLEASE do not rush for results we are in no hurry here...Last edited by gssixgun; 11-08-2010 at 03:29 PM.

Novice honist-wannabe that I am, I jumped on this as a chance to learn. Here are my results:
1. Approximately how many razors had you sharpened on the Naniwas before trying this system = 25-30
2. How many have you tried so far using the system = 5 Two were the first razors I honed to the point of being shave-worthy, three were eBay finds that needed some TLC but the edges were sound.
3. Is this easier = Yes, though making the slurry is a little bit of a hassle using the DMT; with 320 grit sandpaper the slurry came much easier
4. Is this more consistent = for the 5 I honed, yes; despite the range of conditions from previously honed on Nortons to eBay orphans, the results were all pretty consistent
5. Did you use an actual system before trying this one = Just progressing up from the bevel on whatever 1K stone I had up through Naniwa 3K-8K-8K-12K then CrOx pasted strop-but I was inconsistent in how many laps, whether to use slurry, and just did the pasted strop because people talked about it
Results are hard to quantify so take this with a large grain of salt...
6. Were the results smoother to you face IYHO = Much smoother than the first dozen or so I'd honed on Nortons or mixed sets
7. Did the edges feel sharper also = generally yes, likely because I was more concerned to get the bevel set, then to take a set bevel and put it back on a 1K stone probably helped (newbie warning!)
8. It is (probably) a fact that this system would wear out stones faster, knowing that would you still use it = I would because I don't hone as many razors as a honemeister.
9. IYHO would using a system like this help Beginners or Experienced people more = Because it's a "system" a beginner might profit from it once they know how to set a bevel.
10. This whole system hinges on the fact that the Honer KNOWS what a set bevel is, do you see any way to improve that ????
Definitive tests for the bevel being ready is the key for me as a beginner. Right now, I'm using the test of the razor easily shaving moist leg hair at skin level, which seems to be working. Of course, I only have so much leg-hair....
