Thanked: 485Hi there,
With increased use the site gets much easier to navigate, though it's not overly complex, really. Of course it's always great to find information yourself, but I think you'll find that simply asking a question in the main thread of the subject (i.e. honing for a honing question) will get a LOT of responses. You'll find us to be quite a helpful bunch and I don't really come across people getting 'cross' at others for not researching but just asking the question, even when some of us see the same question asked over and over again ;-)
We're looking at creating a 'top ten eternal straight shaver questions' area but it's a work in progress.
As a newer user often gets swamped with answers (as I said, we're very helpful, almost to a fault) and at times the opinions can vary, sometimes it's best to hook up with a mentor and PM them your question. This way you'll get almost customised and personalised support.
We do really aim to provide useful information, so do really encourage new users to ask here, but of course you could use whatever site you wish. Many of us actually genuinely enjoy helping others, so don't hesitate to ask.
Hope this helps.
CarlStranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

Ok you really need to ask for a mentor. There are very good people in your area. To get to BBS, you need to lay the foundation. Face preparation. Do you have a shaving brush? Do you have wet shaving soap? Scuttle? Large Cup?
Not being a smart arse but to get to BBS you need certain essentials. You are going to need to give your face time to adjust to wicked sharp instruments. All these components that the community just has, you will need, lets start with what do you have?
We know that Major set you up with a DE and Shavette. What other tools do you have?
From the basics the community can help.Your only as good as your last hone job.

hoo boy!
If you use the " Google custom search" box in the header of the page:
If you click on the magnifying glass you get a net search.
If you just use you keyboard's enter key, you get a site only search.

You do not have to give me anything. I will eventually have extra money to put into shaving. If you feel that i am trying to fool you, then do not send me anything. If i gave something to someone on this forum and saw it on ebay for sale, i would have a really hard time doing it ever again. In fact, i think that would shut me off permanently.

I am not really sure how to convince you otherwise than to just give you my word.

Thanked: 485Hi there. The shaving foam stuff in a can with compressed air is no good at all for shaving with a straight. Really there's two aspects to a lather, glide and cushion. Glide allows the razor to travel across the face smoothly, cushion (which is a products of bubbles) allows the razor to move on a bed so to speak. The shaving foam does have bubbles of course, but the foam has a LOT of air in it, too much air and not enough 'body'. A good lather will have some body; not too much as otherwise it gets too gluggy. I'd highly recommend either Body Shop Macca Root cream, or Taylor of Old Bond street cream or Tabac cream. Those three are really easy to make a lather with. I wouldn't start with a soap, as soaps can be a little harder to produce a good lather.
I always used to use Proraso pre/post cream it helped with the glide, too.Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?
