** I'm perfectly fine with getting something and having it restored... this is just way more complicated than I had previously thought. I read up on straight razors, and my head about exploded with information.
That was my point. Yeah not using leather but putting the blade to an actual stone. If he was looking into honing this, and being new, we would not want him to damage a beautiful new blade because of it requiring more of an expert level of honing. But if he sends it out, or thinks it's too nice for him to try to hone himself then the profile and grind would be more of his preference than skill level.

My advice would be, make sure it is honed (sharpened) properly and buy from this forum or another reputable place. Avoid ebay.

Straight razor designs .com would be the best IMO if you want new. You will get a razor that is shave ready. If he only has one, I am willing to bet it wont matter what it is as long as its quality.

Ok. Is shave ready the same as honed? I thought I read somewhere that shave ready didn't always mean that it had been honed by a professional. If not, should I then send it to someone to have honed?

Do I need to buy other.. stuff?

Oh don't worry about it being complicated. We just want to pin down any possible preferences. But we will try to make this as easy as possible for you. Just tell us any observations that you have noticed with him and his shaving.

What we define as shave ready is where the razor is honed by a professional and not just by the manufacturer. If you get a razor from straight razor designs or any vender from here it will be professionally honed before it is shipped to you

That is easily the best news I've had in a while. I was expecting it to be more expensive.. I've seen a few in the $300 range, but I obviously have no idea what the difference would be.

I want to make sure it would be a fairly universal *yay* from all of you if you opened what I end up buying as a gift.
