Thread: Newbie first purchase questions

I am ready to purchase my first straight razor. Would a good starting razor be the Dovo Classic? Also is there shopping available through this site? Would like someone to hone whichever one I buy first from what I have read on the beginners section. Also would like suggestions on other items like brushes and strops.

I would steer clear of the Dovo if you can get an Aust or a Revisor. There is no shopping available through this site, at least there shouldn't be. All your other questions or concerns are answered here: Shopping list for beginners - Straight Razor Place Library (or, in more detail, here).

Welcome to SRP. Just be sure your razor comes with a "real shave ready edge". Purchase from a vendor who will rehone the factory edge before shipment. Just open the box and shave without stropping for your first shave. This will give you a benchmark for a "shave. ready shaving edge".

Where are you from. If you let us know we can steer you towards honest vendors who supply shave ready razors. Always good to add to your profile for help

Those are both safer options for a beginner. You will have plenty of opportunities to make stupid mistakes, but those two points will reduce the likelihood of making one of them. You have to know where that blade is at all times and if you approach your face without watching, you can sink a spike point in pretty quickly.

Can I get close under the nose with them?

Yes, you don't actually have to use the point to shave under the nose. You can use any part of the blade and still shave under the nose.

Do you want new or vintage? I,m in the camp for the Aust if getting first new, even though my first new razor was a Dovo Best, and is a fine shaving razor , just the fit, finish of the product is not as good as the Aust, now as for vintage , the classifieds are full of razors shave ready, and in all price ranges, also if buying new buy from a site that will sell you a shave ready razor instead of factory edge, if you read enough on this site there are a coupe sites most here do business with , I,m not going to name names there all over our website , you have to decide who you like best or by price.
