Thanked: 44Newby Kits
OK so I let the cat out of the bag in the chat so I should post it here to be fair. Hopefully starting next week I will begin offering newby kits with the help of our favorite vendors. The idea of this kit will be to offer newbies the right stuff, at the right prices, and to introduce them to the joys that each of our favorite vendors that are active on the board bring to this board. It will also be a way of getting a good quality, shave ready razor that is vintage, a Tony miller strop, soap, shave stick, and aftershave from Colleen at the Gentlemans Quarter and Sue at Mama Bear and a shavemac or vulfix badger brush from Jim at Vintage Blades. I am also trying to get a good lather bowl (not from walmart) but that hasn't been finalized. That way you can get everything you need for that first perfect shave in one spot and know where to go when you want more great stuff.
I am hoping to begin offering these next week in the BST forum in groups so as not to flood the forum. I am expecting them to run around $150 shipped depending on the quality of the razor included. I will post more details as everything gets finalized and things start showing up but I did want to give a heads up since i told some people in the chat.

Thanked: 44I am thinking this 13/16" bengal so for you newbs that is between 6/8 and 7/8ths with be the one to kick it off. It is mint. I wanted a special one for the first set and the panel of judges agree that this one fits the bill.

Great Idea!
I think that this is a VERY cool idea... when it comes to fruition, I will definitely purchase a kit as soon as funds are available. There are so many variables involved in getting started in this that the thought of being able to purchase a kit that contains components that someone who knows what they are doing has assembled for an affordable price is very reassuring.

Thanked: 3A suggestion for the bowl.
I don't know any of the factors involved in setting this up, so I apologize if this is useless, but...
I have found the shaving bowl from TGQ to be very nice, pretty attractive looking, and very reasonably priced. I think it would make an excellent addition to the kit. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
Also, I'm jealous of anyone who purchases this. It's too late for me, but it sounds excellent.

This sounds like a fantastic idea. I'm looking to acquire my first straight razor and gear, but by the time I found this place I was feeling like I was lost in a jungle. There's tons of wonderful and not so wonderful advice out there, and while I'm looking forward to sorting it all out, I'd like to have something to start working with at the very least. I've only been her for a few days, but I'm already very impressed with the community here. I feel that I can put my trust (and cash) in good hands, and come out with a wonderful change in lifestyle. Thanks for bringing everything together, Topher!

Thanked: 44I am glad you guys like the idea. I remember how hard it was to sort things out myself. I have a full day of work today and tommorrow will be finishing up some scales for Richardhead that are long overdue and sending out the ones I just sold. But after that I will finalize everything with the vendors and set this in full motion.

Thanked: 44Update: Jim and I are trying to get a special SRP shavemac brush but it won't be ready for a while. So the first 4 kits will include the more expensive Shavemac 944 at my expense. I have one and LOVE it! It will come in faux ivory and is a handmade brush.

Wow, this sounds great. Any chance us non-newbs can get in on the action?
