Thread: How Many Razors Do Newbies have?

One straight off being honed, and one DE.

i think thats all there will ever be! I like simplicity.

i started with one,found it in a yard sell then found blades at wally world,had it for years then found out they still make brushes then found ebay.....well now ive got 7 ready to go rite now and about 8 str8's purchased last month and the hones,strop etc.for them,gonna try str8's soon as i get one shave ready.i dont find rad as a bad thing as long as you dont spend your bill/grocery money on it,then you mite need help,some guys collect the wrapper's off of blades some blades some razors,its better than drugs.

I bought two from Larry when I started in February but now I have five. Not sure how that happened so fast....

Lol...my first one was a Dovo that I purchased as part of a package fro SRD and Lynn made it shave ready for me...still my gold standard. Then I got RAD...been shaving with a sr8 for 9 months or so and probalby have 30 that I made shave ready, 2 or 3 that need more honing/stropping and 5 or so that need more intensive resto work if I decide to move forward with it and have them sent out...plus a 7 day set back in the states...lol. I don't have the tools nor equipment out here in the sand box so I'll likely end them to one of the pros on this site.

yeah, the wedges are a tad more difficult to get ready...I have a 4/4 (I think) Red Imp wedge, a HUGE W&B wedge, a "Spike Cutlery" wedge and a few more...when done right they shave like a champ...a bit less feedback to me though but smoother than all heck when compared to the full hollows...full hollows sometime seem to feel like they are "flexing" while to me, wedges are more like shaving with a knife which imo is close to what a wedge str8 is anyway

I love to catch trout on flies I have tied myself, and am getting the same satisfaction from shaving with a razor I've honed myself. I recently bought a wedge and just can't seem to get it shave ready, so I'll probably send that one out.

I think I'll be good with two for a while, and then I'll probably start buying / selling more in search of what will eventually be my IDEAL razor.

I don't see myself ever having more than three or four on hand at any one time, though. Got to try and keep from hoarding these things.

I wonder how many of us, myself included, said something to the effect of "how may razors DOES a guy need?...I figure only one or two" right now, I have enough for a 5 week rotation if you count my 7 day set...so never say never...and enjoy...

I don't have any yet - I'm still reading all of the FAQs - but there are several on my watch list...

Similar tastes indeed. You say you are getting ready to work on some strops? Get this, I have a beautiful old belting leather briefcase I never use anymore and I have been eying it and thinking "hey that old belting leather might make some nice strops". So basically I am thinking about destroying a briefcase that cost around $800 twenty years ago to make some strops that could be purchased for around $50-$60. It concerns me a bit that this strikes me as perfectly reasonable. I welcome opinions as to the lunacy or brilliance of such a course of action.

Okay I gave in and bought another razor. If it makes a difference it's a fixer upper. That's like two obessions in one.
