Thread: Exclusive Straight Shave?

Hey all,

Just curious as to what everyone has as a shaving routine? Are you guys using your straight for each and every shave or just those special times when you can relax and have a leisurely shave?
I was just curious since I was able to get myself some sweet gillette de's that I won off ebay. I am planning on using them for those in between shaves when I feel like being lazy lol.

Every time I shave my face I use a straight razor. My wife has a few DEs for her lazier days. She also uses DEs on her underarm most of the time as straight shaving that area is difficult for her. I've used a DE as well as a SE, but wasn't overly impressed when compared to my straight razors.

You'll find the answer to your question is all over the place. Many use straights exclusively and some only when they have the time and many just alternate from a DE to a straight when they feel like it.

i'm fairly new to this. I try to use my straight every time. But if I'm in a hurry I'll finish the chin area with my Merkur DE. That's a difficult area for me and I need to take my time to get it right with my straight, although I get better, and faster, at it each time I use the straight.

I started this hobby with a DE, and I used my straights more and more as I learned to sharpen them Since about a year, I use straights exclusively.

At first, it was every three or so days, because I have very sensitive skin. Once my skin adapted to the blade and my technique improved it became much more frequent.

Now it's exclusive. The straight razor and I are in a committed relationship.

Depends on how the planets are aligned and the elevation of the moon that night. Last night I used a Waterville straight I've been messing with. The day before, a slant DE.
Tonight? I haven't yet decided. It's why this stuff is fun.

Another exclusive straight shaver weighing in.

Since I'm still just learning , I use both a Dovo 5/8ths for my first WTG pass, then I do a touch up pass with a Schick Injector..

I always only ever straight shave. There was once though:

It was over three years ago now. My wife had just given birth to our son and in my hospital bag I had packed the last two Trak II cartridges that had been cowering in the corner of my old toiletries kit for years, just in case. As it turned out we were in hospital for a few extra days than anticipated what with thirty-two hours of labour, an emergency C-section (she's still my hero) and a subsequent jaundice treatment. Nothing too serious, but certainly time consuming. I was looking after both of them pretty much 24/7 at that point and didn't want my newborn son to have to discover whisker stubble from his papa as one of his first experiences. I wanted the snuggles you know? So, I broke out the cartridge and did what needed to be done. I remember thinking that it wasn't all that bad at all. No pulling and a decent shave. Was I misremembering how things were? Two days later I had to break out the cartridge again. Different story. Pulled and not a very close shave at all. No way to tune the edge(s) to improve the situation either. There's still one more cartridge left somewhere, but it really is there for some unimagined difficulty. Perhaps some day my curiosity towards DE's will get the better of me, but until then it's straight shaves all the way for me.
