Doing 300 passes would cause that kind of a problem. You need to mix in some other strokes to keep a consistent edge. Watch Glens video.

As you finish work your way down to just a few forward strokes. The fewer the better. I like to remove all the lower grit, than polish, than sharpen.

But, my strokes a pretty light.

Remember that this isn't about you honing like we hone, this is about you achieving the same result, which can take longer until you've mastered a good stroke.
