Thanked: 1185I said almost never, but with that, I will add that although I seldom use a styptic pencil, I've found that when you actually need one (i.e. you've cut yourself) there's nothing I've found that work's better.

I agree completely with you!! I'm older and even with a DE I seem to get occasional weepers! Are weepers bothersome? Yes! Tolerable? Yes! Worth the end results of using a straight?? DEFINITELY YES!!!!!!!!
I have a septic pencil that I've used for over a year and I just bought a replacement for it!!! The only reason I'm replacing it is because when I hold it I don't dry my hands, the water makes the compound slowly melt away!! So where I hold it, it became so thin that it broke!!
What the Hell! $2 after a year!?! Beats the Hell out of $20+ for a pack of %@^&*($%^%^$+%^&%#^#$ FANCY 3+blades Disposables that gave me ingrown hairs and razor burn not to mention emptying my wallet to make corporate America rich!!!Last edited by cudarunner; 04-14-2013 at 06:28 AM.

And I will say thanks to posting in this thread I needed mine today.
Well it was probably due to trying a different technique on my chin
But I am going to blame this thread....

Thanked: 580Around about my hundredth shave, Tenth in a row with a Puma i have been experimenting with, and took a fillet below my chin. I mean you could have deep fried that sucker, and Hannibal would have scoffed it down. Well not that bad, but you get the idea. Styptic rarely comes out these days, but lesson learned. Never hurry, Zen time.

Thanked: 485What's a styptic pencil?
{edit} seriously though, I never cut myself. Maybe two nicks in all the time I've shaved with a straight.Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

Ya, every once in a while. I'm usually pretty careful. Actually the spots that I get nicked at most are not even hard spots to shave. Just might have a hint of razor bump or acne and all it takes is a pass too many and the blade over exfoliates and opens it up. no big deal. in fact most of the time if their not serious cuts they just heal on their quickly or get taken care of with the good ol' alum block.

I use my alum block. If the alum block doesn't close it then I break out the styptic pencil. Funny thing though... I learned to take it out of its tube before a shave as slippery hands caused it to fall and I have three pieces of a pencil in the tube now.
Shaving with facial hair is like a golfcourse. It's a challenge of rough and fairways. You are the skilled greenskeeper of your face?

Thanked: 1I'm the same way. Knock wood, I've only nicked myself once with my straight while shaving my face -- caught the edge of my lip. Most of my nicks occur on my scalp when I use my safety razor to shave my head. And those little suckers bleed like crazy, so I have to go straight to the styptic pencil.

Thanked: 1Yep needed one today didn't have one because I have cleaned out my travel bag and must of forgot to put it back in.
Just put a small nick on my chin which I normally would not be overly concerned about but it's my best mates wedding and I'm a groomsmen.
It healed up with a bit of water and my Alum block.
