Thanked: 0Hi Riann
Did you come right?
Im by no means a honemeister but I have had success honing my own razor and would be willing to assist for free on the honing part if you want?
btw, im located in rural Limpopo, but my postoffice seems very effective...

Hi There
at this moment my restoration process on my razors is at a stand still. I did find a knife supplier that can help me with pinning and material for scales, but they sit in PTA, so i need to go there one day and just by the stuff. For honing im look at lapping film as a alternative to wet stones, i find a place close by, but they dont have all the grit grade im looking for and not sure when they will receive stock again.

Thanked: 0I have a set of Norton hones up to 8k which I imported. I just bought an old Bismarck from bidorbuy that will need restoration, I haven't received it yet so I'm hoping that the blade is still good enough to restore. Could you share the details of that knife supplier? I'm sure I'll be needing pins and scales etc in the future. Thanks

Thanked: 0That's nice that you have a connection through your barber for your stuff, all looks very nice!
I bought all my stuff new from shavenation.com, was quite expensive with the current exchange rate, but my reasoning is it will all last me a long time.
I bought:
Dovo 5/8 inox razor with olive wood scales
Simpson's pure badger brush
Edwin and Jagger sandalwood soap with a mug
A nice Illinois razor co strop
Norton hones 220/1000 and 4000/8000 with a lapping stone
That's all I have now, up to now been cartridge shaving with all sorts of brands and tried electric at one stage, I've never been really satisfied, but now I'm excited with my straight razor progress!
I will try post some photos when I get a chance.
Thanks for the knife supplies info, I was unaware that there were suppliers like that here, I will definitely be buying some!

Nice, i have also look at shavenation.com stuff and also there youtube vids. if you want soap and creams there is some local places that sells all the international brands here in joburg, you can order online as well, plus there is a shop in Cape Town that sell only old school barber stuff, all handmade. let me know, will sent you the links.
The last few months i have been searching like mad to find local places.
i also never like shaving in the past with stuff coming out of a can and cartridges that is so expensive, but since i come across the old fashion shaving, well thats that, now i enjoy shaving. Got myself some nice soap and creams, 2 brushes, Murker DE Razor and recently a BlueBeard shavette razor.

Thanked: 0I have been looking for local suppliers, so far I have found Mantality and The Old English Shaving Shop.
Do you know of any others?
Between the two of them they have a limited selection, I don't really want to import the "consumables" as the shipping costs are a killer.
Thanks
By the way, I honed the Bismarck, which is actually not a Bismarck, it just has the scales on it, it is a Joseph Allan and Sons razor, didnt bother to much with restoration, just cleaned it up a bit, it shaves pretty well, but im still not as comfortable with it as I am with my Dovo.

I only found them as well when it comes to razors and strops, i have notice there is not a big market for old method shaving in South Africa, only the good stuff is overseas (as always).
But can help you with soaps and cream and brushes......
Official Online Store | Crabtree & Evelyn
Metropolitain Cosmetics : all the finest brands, all in one place. Skincare,ÂCosmetics, Makeup, Fragrance &ÂPerfume
Men's - The Body Shop South Africa
Shaving Brushes & Soaps - Grooming

some of these shop sells more stuff then what they are displaying on the website.
Clicks and Dischem also have stuff for good prices like the Tabac Brands.
Try Ebay as well, im not always keen to buy there, but you do get refunded when a package does not arrive.
