My dream box has nothing to do with straight razors!

...Ok, I'll bring this over to "off topic"....

Well I went to some local stores yesterday and priced supplies for making a nice razor box. So far, I'm thinking the box will be made of cedar wood. The inside will be lined with either velvet, silk or satin (I thought about leather for a moment, but not too sure about that one). Built-in antique lock comes standard

    Any other ideas, guys?

Well, I know I prefer dark wood, but (correct me if I'm wrong as I know almost squat about wood-stuff) you can get some sort of material which is applied to the wood to make it darker.
Other than that, the spacers should preferably be able to hold 7 razors from 5/8 to 8/8.

Actually I don't even know for sure what colour cedar is, I've seen some stuff on google just now. And I'm not sure if its because of some treatment it gets later or because theres some very different types of that wood =)

There will definitely be room for 7 razors.

As far as the color of the wood, sure there are a number of things you can do including staining. I could also use oak/red oak instead of cedar?

I know I've always been partial to darker woods like walnut, but use what is feasible for you in prototyping and then maybe offer a variety.

I like the leather lining idea, any reason you decided against it?

Somewhat personal preference, and I'm not sure what real leather costs yet. I found a faux-leather, but definitely did not like the way it felt.

I love the idea of leather, especially red leather.

I'll be finishing a "model" of the razor box tonight (just made one out of cardboard so I could get the correct size and spaces for razors established). I have most of the pieces I need. I decided on red oak wood w/ red velvet lining for this first round. It will also feature a half-mortise lock and possibly a mirror under the lid.

I bought a narrow shelf that comes with a raised lip all-round from The Container Store. It mounts without visible support onto your wall. I used the basket weave non-slip material drawer liner material to space the razors off the bottom a bit.

They now line-up diagonally in my bathroom.

Of course, I live in Illinois, where that's pretty damn close to the truth--our last governor in jail and our current one looking over his shoulder if he's got any sense at all.

That aside, I like your cigar-box idea and will keep it in mind if I get some spare time this summer.
