Thanked: 3227Pixelfixed might be on to something about loft for a 30mm Manchurian knot. Seems Simpsons agrees with that Chubby 3 Manchurian Badger . Looks like you might be able to use the Chubby 3 as a dimensional guide.

Thanked: 116Bob, you're thinking the same way I am! The color of that knot actually looks identical to the one I just received. I've been wondering lately where the big manufacturers source their badger hair... I wonder if they go the same route: wholesale China.
The nice thing with the vendor I've found is that there is no quantity rules about ordering, he's more than happy to send just one at a time.

I like a lot of backbone and if possible, a scritchy feel. I find that is more easily gotten with shorter lofts than longer. There are probably plenty of exceptions but most of the longer loft brushes I've been able to try are softer and have less backbone than the shorter lofts. I wasn't suggesting you have that one finished with a short loft BTW, just asking what the 80mm starting point would dictate the finished product to be. I have been an end user on quite a few brushes but never built one.

Thanked: 116Wow, lots of interest here!! If everyone that pm'd me gets one we should start a thread about brushes created from these knots and review them.
I didn't order the most expensive knot at all, they label their 'super silvertip' as their highest grade but I really wanted to try a 'high mountain white' aka 'manchurian' knot after all the recent talk about them on the threads.
I should also add that the packaging was nicely done. The vendor put this brush in a shoebox sized cardboard box that was filled with a TON of paper and the knot right in the center. The knot was wrapped in a tube of paper and in a ziploc bag.Last edited by brooksie967; 03-23-2013 at 08:10 PM.

Thanked: 116I should also mention that, from what I understand, the wholesaling website doesn't release the funds to the actual seller until there is confirmation of delivery. They seem to have a pretty good set up for buyer protection etc.

FWIW, all I know about the "Manchurian" badger is from the Somerset Simpson edition some years back. From what I've read they had two editions. One was the "Super-Super" and the other actually had Manchurian in lamp black on the handle. I had one of the latter and it could probably have removed the chrome from a trailer hitch. The optimum of scritchy. IME Rooney Finests and Plisson HMWs are also nice and scritchy.
I have repeatedly asked if the current Simpson Manchurian is 'scritchy but I can't get a definitive yes or no. Of course that depends on the end user. Brushes I thought were nice and scritchy were not scritchy at all to guys I sold them to. I even went to the extreme of emailing Simpson to ask and received no reply. I guess they don't know.

Thanked: 116Jimmy I can only go by the pictures but the pattern, size of black band and length of the tips on the knot I just received and the one in the simpson looks incredibly similar!
