Yeah, like Bill said, AFAIK it is just marketing. Almost all badger knots come out of China. Of course they grade them and IIRC where on the animal they source the hair from makes a difference in the quality and feel of the bristles. Still cool to have HMW or Manchurian stamped on the handle ...... even if it doesn't really mean anything.

Thanked: 116The vendor sums it up for us and is exactly what i've read here and on other forums: The badger knot is made of High Mountain Badger. It is also called Manchurian badger. The badger hair comes from the badgers which live in the high land and mountain root in Northeast, northwest, southwest of China. The hair is stiffer than silvertip for its diameter is thicker than silvertip, but its softness is the same as super silvertip at the tip.The black ring is twice of the super silvertip badger, so it is also called double band by many people. The brushes made of Manchurian badger are firm at the base, yet incredibility soft at the tips.

Thanked: 3227Well, I am another one that thinks the Manchurian/High Mountain White silvertip badger hair is different from straight Silvertip. The black bands are wider and the hair is stiffer likely from being thicker but I'll be darned if I am going to mike them for comparison. The tops are whiter too but then who knows they could be whitened in processing.
Manchurian on the left, Silvertip in the middle and what has been reported to be High Mountain White on some sites on the right as you look at them. Who really knows?

Thanked: 116Bob, that Simpson manchurian looks very similar to the 'super' that Rooney uses.

Thanked: 2027Manchuria is a country on the border with China, badgers ravage the crops and are considered pests, are harvested by the farmers who in turn eat the badgers and sell the pelts to the companys that make badger Knots, who in turn sell the knots to purveyers of said knots, who in turn give them names such as High mountain Badger, queen of everest Badger, sri lankan badger, Bill gates badger etc.
Granted there are differant grades, the best of which is silvertip which comes from the neck area of the badger.
You see the neck hair is the best because badgers live in cold country, somtimes even hibernate for short periods,so the neck hair keeps the blood flow thru the carotid arterys warm that feeds the brain (60% of all blood flow go's to the brain in most Mammals)
So that being said, should a badger be killed two ft over the Manchurian Border,it is a manchurian badger,If on the china side it is just a regular badger, thats the rest of the story

Thanked: 3227Brooksie
Maybe Rooneys name for Manchurian is Super? That is the problem with badger hair, everyone seems to use different names to describe a similar grade. Could well be the same grade.

I really don't know what people mean by "scritchy". I imagine that if you leaned into it hard enough doing circles making lather you could give yourself some road rash. I know for sure that I gave myself road rash with the SOC before it broke in. The SOC is a little stiffer and will give a nice invigorating face scub while lathering but no redness. The Simpsons Manchurian may have a tad less stiffness but also feels good doing scrubbing circles while face lathering. Neither are prickly like that darned synthetic Body shop brush I had. Don't know if any of that makes any sense to you, hope it does.

My ivory handled brush is a 30mm size with 75mm loft and it is a big brush indeed. Actually too big for me to use except now and then.
Think you're man enough to handle that big boy? har har.
That does deserve the royal treatment in a handle. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero
