I know now that my ideal brush is really two brushes, one short one for building up a lather in my hand or directly on my face, and one long brush to clear the sides of my scuttle and make a nice lather.

I also learned that in both cases I like badger the best because its soft and feels good on my face.
badger rules man,any brush will make lather. But in the end, cheap may not be better.

Agreed. Badger is the winner. Next brush will be a long badger with a handle big enough to fit my hand.

For 50 bucks my recommendation is a Semogue 830 (a tad over 20 bucks), a cake of MWF and a bottle of Clubman. I have a couple of expensive badgers, but I can whip up a great lather with my cheap 830.

if I had to pick 2 of my brushes to use only, my ideal stable would be an Omega 11047 mixed badger/boar brush, and a Whipped Dog 30mm silvertip knot in one of their handle options. The omega because its small (so ideal for travel, it fits in the Simpson travel tube), has good backbone, and yet is still soft. I just recieved my Whipped Dog silvertip brush and it is the softest and also most dense brush I have by a long shot, but it is large, holds a ton of water so its not very economical with soaps/creams, so for me having both of those would satisfy almost any scenario I could come up with as far as brushes go. And both could be had for under $50.

For $50, I'd get a synthetic brush, like the Omega 346235 Synthetic Badger Brush. I love mine.
