Only down side to an oil finish is there maintenance. Some time in the future you will need to re apply the oil. Don't get me wrong, oil finish is super pretty and I like it a lot. That being said, CA or poly can be applied and you never have to worry about it ever again.

Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever. But, just like every other finish out there, if the wood is dry, and prep'd properly, it should give any clear coating finish a better chance of lasting longer.

"One of the worst burls I've turned for foreign matter was Briar. Nothing like hitting a pocket of sand. Ahhhhhh!!!"
I've made some pipes before. Nothing like putting in hours of sanding and then finding an inclusion that ruins the whole thing.
