Thanked: 4206Rubberset 400 replica project
Figured I’d stop claiming thread space over in the “what are you working on” thread.
I love the 400 shape and feel. So much so I made a few arduously by hand and lathe. Turned out well, but I wanted to go to another level so I have been working with my homemade 4 axis engraving rig to automate the process of 80% of the rough and detail work.
I’m not an AutoCAD guy bought have been muddling through the learning curve.
Had a few successes, and a few failures so far.
Half way through on a nice piece of mottled maple.
And then when things go wrong with the Z axis..
But overall, it’s coming along and I’m having fun experimenting with new project challenges.
This nice piece of burl from Rezdog is up next.
Cheers gents.."Depression is just anger,, without the enthusiasm."

Well, if you really mean replica it's gotta be the precisely identical item to the original to the nth degree including all materials and dimensions.
It looks like quite a job. It should keep you busy for a while. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

The way Mike works it will be 4 tries and about 10 hours invested before it is perfect.

Thanked: 4206Thanks Tim. I do try get things as close to perfect as I can.
I may stop short of recreating the rubberset trademark butt logo although I do have the image.
I figure maybe replica isn’t quite the right word, maybe homage might be the better word.
Wouldn’t be true branding mine as made in USA, will settle for made in NA.
Have actually been considering a makers mark that my daughter designed for me.
Lots more tweaking on this design before I’d be proud to put a mark to it. These will end up kindling if I’m not happy with the results.
I’ve created these in 2 separate turning programs so I can mix up materials on the end results between base and ferrule.
From a dimensional perspective, I’ve got them pretty tight to true.
More images and experiments to follow.
The below are a one piece in walnut, a base in an American burl, and one of my older prototype alumilite castings in bronze that didn’t quite work but is saved for dimensional reference.
Cheers..Last edited by MikeB52; 03-02-2019 at 01:52 AM.

Homage and your mark in my opinion would be excellent.
Different materials, etc.
I admire and or am jelous of your using material that some one sent you. I got a piece of pacific yew from Rezdog that is going to take some courage to try to shape. Also I have a piece of San mai from Scott that I am afraid to use because I might mess it up.
I know I should use it and it was meant to be used but...........

After seeing your forging skills, you’re selling yourself short.
Yea Mike, those first iterations are terrible but there’s room in my shave den for ‘em . Keep it coming, I love seeing how you work through a problem and don’t give up.
On another note, I think Victor and I figured out the Dorko 444 a little bit, as soon as I get tooled up we’ll see what kind of damage I can do.

Thanked: 4206Totally get that Tim. Shaun sent me some of that yew too, and like you I was slow, and fearful almost to cut into it for fear of friggin it up.
Once cut, it got easier, hehe. This burl he sent me, just beautiful stuff I’ve been saving for special turns. This handle could be one of them.
Going to try one in some of that bog oak MikeT sent me,,,maybe. Afraid that stuff will snap carbide cutters as it’s basicaly petrified almost.
And Dave, thanks for the kind words buddy. I have more fun making this stuff then my wife says I should.
